And, for the record, politicians don't have to make split second decisions like a QB.   They have time to consider their next action.   However, in a debate, they have had time to prepare.   Showing up and looking foolish is a bad indicator of intelligence.    That said, Stockdale is/was not an idiot.   But he wasn't prepared.   Palin likes to be on TV almost as much as Obama.   Due to the extra exposure she wants/gets, she's going to make stupid comments because she doesn't have time to prepare for it.   That doesn't make her a stupid woman no more than Stockdale's first debate made him a stupid man.

I'm assuming you don't hang around with her on a daily basis.  So I'm assuming you're basing your opinion on what clips you see on the TV or what articles you read.    Here's something to consider:    A 10 second moment in time isn't indicative of very much.   And if you're being fed those 10 seconds by a media outlet, and you are, you're getting what they want you to see/read.

Nope.   I'm gonna pretend that you don't know her so you're basing your impressions on what you've seen/read in the media.    Do you have some super secret access to Palin that the rest of us don't?

Either way, this has been twisted into "Palin is dumb" rather than a comparison to Stockdale who, quite frankly, made Dan Quayle look smart.

The entire notion of "smart" and "dumb" as singular states of intelligence is, well, dumb. People have different strengths and weaknesses in the way their brains work. For instance AJ Green scored incredibly badly on his Wonderlic recently, which makes him "dumb" in one sense, but his spatial intelligence is probably great and his kinesthetic intelligence (which covers things like hand/eye coordination and muscle memory) off the charts.

As for Palin, she's clearly very smart when it comes to interpersonal intelligence - reading people and relating to them. In the areas which are generally accepted as 'real intelligence' though - linguistic, mathematic, even philosophical/existential - she seems to be badly lacking. That profile matches up pretty well with what I know of Quayle too, and in both cases that goes beyond 10 second soundbites.

It doesn't match up with Adm. Stockdale though. His linguistic intelligence -- at least by the time in his life when he was Perot's VP candidate -- was pitiful, but as an extremely well-respected and decorated officer he likely would have has something close to genius level spatial intelligence, with his mathematic and kinesthetic intelligence not too far behind.

Is Palin "dumb"? In a lot of ways, incredibly so. On the other hand, she's pulling in more money than anybody in this thread, so by that measure she's smarter than any of us.

I guess I'll have to ask you the same thing.   Do you run in the same social/political circles as Palin?  Or Quayle?   If not, I'll assume you get what the media feeds you.   And that is 10 second soundbites of what they want you to see/hear.

I'll concede that far too much of what I see/hear from her comes off as someone who is undereducated.  She seems to try to get by with down-to-earth wit and charm.   And, when that doesn't work, she lashes out like a teenage girl.   But I also accept that I only have access to what is doled out by negative media or positive handlers.  I have no access to her.

Stockdale, who really did seem to be far too incompetent for political office, was an extremely intelligent man, I'm sure, in far more fields than I could ever hope to be.  But media coverage was limited and all of it made him appear to be a buffoon.  I felt Quayle got the same sort of coverage. 

Anyway, in our worst moments, all of us look like raving lunatics or complete idiots.    Putting those moments on display is what political detractors do.    Supporters only show you saving babies from charging lions.    Everyone is somewhere in the middle.

These people have resumes, Mike. Maybe that's too much like research monkey work for you to look beyond those 10-second sound bites you seem to love so much.

I may be confessing to my own lack of comprehension here, but I'm not entirely sure if you understand that the similarities between Stockdale and Palin are largely superficial, and are deliberately wasting our time, or if you genuinely have gone swamphawk on us.
