It should have been is the memory of Kurt Cobain overrated? The band was good, but I think his early death lead to a kind of cult following that they didnt really deserve.

Lithium makes it impossible to over rate them. Pearl Jam rode the coattails and reaped the benefit of being their replacement. Is that unfair to PJ? Yes but it does not make it less true.

The early death thing happens all the time, but Nirvana was by no means overrated.  They had a huge following before his suicide.  If you've ever seen them live then you know what I mean.

ditto Jimi Hendrix!  That dude sucked.  If he had lived he would have been exposed like Kiss.

Oh, c'mon.    Hendrix and Nirvana were huge influences on music in general.  KISS was a kind of a "How can we get noticed?" band.   That's not to say Hendrix or Nirvana were fantastic.    Just that they shouldn't be grouped with KISS.

I would say Nirvana would be remembered, but they were good for 1 more album, if that, before imploding.

They would have been looked at like, say, Cream. "Holy crap that was good, too bad it didn't last".

And no, I'm not saying they're musically similar to Cream, just would have had similar legacies.

Cream?  Didn't even make 3 years together.  Nirvana rocked it for 14 years.  No similar legacy at all.
