To be fair, swampy has a misguided point.

People who say "I read -insert book name- last month" always say it with a smug attitude.  Like reading is a big deal.  It's 2011, most people can read.  Maybe, a hundred years ago, reading was quite an accomplishment.  Not so much these days.   This is along the same line as the user who refuses to watch TV news because he reads the French newspaper for his news.

You see, crazy, that's where you're mistaken.   I've said, repeatedly, that I'm not anti-reading(you can make your own judgements, and I'm sure you already have about anti-intellectual and anti-knowledge).    I've said, again repeatedly, that the TV news provides a quick, in the background, overview of the news.  If a topic interests you, and you'd like to know more, there's this thing called the internet where you can research the topic to your heart's desire. 

Honestly, our "conflict" stems from the smug attitude of those who say "TV news is the pits.  I'd never watch TV news" because it makes them feel superior.  I don't have to read French papers to feel superior.   Nor do I have to announce I read French newspapers in order to feel superior.   I may, in fact, read French newspapers all day long.

This is silly.  Isn't it possible that someone doesn't watch TV news because they simply find it horrible?  I haven't watched in years, and until this thread I never mentioned it to anyone.  It doesn't make me feel "superior" any more than not reading Harlequin romances or not listening to Britney Spears songs make me feel superior.

When one announces such a thing, it's simply to "prove" their intellect.   It's stupid(especially on the internet).  May as well announce your IQ, your salary or your bench press.   It's internet dick-measuring.    And it's silly.     Don't watch TV news?  So be it.  Announcing it is unnecessary unless you're looking for some sort of confirmation.

Books always bothered me just because they seem to enjoy some kind of sacred status. Things in a book are judged superior to things anywhere else.

Books always seem to be written to prove the writers point, are rarely fair and are obsolete the minute they are published because anything that happens one second later can never be in that book.
