Mike, I don't think this writer was really aiming for "here's the problem, and here's my proposed solution."  The writer's giving his impressions, and by doing that trying to stir up discussion/reflection in his readers.

As for the impossible option B, I think that's sort of what the writer's trying to do (change the culture) in his own small way.  Get people to look at what education's become and maybe think, "Damn, prodcuing human capital for employers shouldn't be the main goal of schools."

I do think he was saying "Here's the problem."   I think people who do that should have solutions in mind.  Nonetheless, it was an interesting read.

I don't think it's "producing human capital for employers" at all.   I think it's "getting what I want from life."     Fortunately/unfortunately, right now that is getting material items.   That's our culture.  Not everyone takes part in it, I'm thinking Amish and the like, but that's what the vast majority of us do.  Trying to get families to teach their children to be better humans rather than "getting theirs" is an impossible option.

Ha.  Well, the writer didn't look into the camera and shout out a bumper sticker solution to a complex issue, as one of your cable news anchors might.  But the "solution" is there in his essay, if you read closely enough.  

Hint: More courses that turn students into human beings, fewer that turn them into human capital.
College is supposed to turn you into a "Human Being"??

College is supposed to prepare you for life and your career.

The vast majority of people going to college are doing so to open up career opportunities.   They choose the classes required to get their degree.   They may choose a few "electives" to make themselves more well-rounded or they may choose basket-weaving.   Offering more courses that "turn them into human beings" has no effect unless they take those courses.   

Tell me how you make that happen.
By teaching the courses they are taking differently.

This is what the left has been doing to education in America for the last 50 years.

We should teach math, science, language, history and civics.

This whole touchy feely we are not real people stuff is destroying our kids.

Are you dumb or just playing a role?

How, exactly, would one teach courses differently in order to make a student "more human"?

Math:  2 plus 3 equals the ability to empathize with the plight of the poor.
History:  Abe Lincoln declared war on the South.  The South was not nice to slaves.
Science:  Mercury is the smallest known planet.   It's very hot much like people who do not have air conditioning.  The government should supply AC to everyone.

And, again, college is a little late in my opinion.   Maybe start it at home when they're young and impressionable.    You know, family values and stuff the libs hate.

As a parent of two school-aged children who just started Grade 3 and 6, I'm curious about where you get your knowledge of the curricula in today's classroom. Do you have kids? Are you checking their homework? Have you volunteered in their classroom?
Jeeeeeeeeeeeesus, bite your tongue!! Don't even remotely suggest that swamp teach young minds ANYTING!!!!!!!
