What is the proper role of government in the US? Topic

With all this talk of "job creation", I am a little baffled.

I am of the belief that the US government should not be in the role of "creating jobs".  That is the role of private industry, at least in our history.

The government's role should be to establish and enforce some basic, fair guidelines and rules for how the game is to be played, adn then get out of the way.

At least in my perfect world I am imagining.

I agree that in an ideal world, government shouldn't be a primary job creator and should just be concerned with creating an environment in which private sector job creation will flourish.

This isn't an ideal world. If the private sector, by and large, is choosing not to create jobs, I'd rather the government do it than nobody at all.

So we have been in a recession for a few years now.

Everyone acts like this is a whole new America.

The left is always throwing around numbers...10 years or 30 years.

The economy and job creation was fine until 2008.

The economy was great while Bush was President and great while Reagan was President.

IF YE WERE A HEDGE FUND MANAGER OR DEF. DEPT CONTRACTOR

Or if you were Working for the Detroit Symphony Development Department, Or for a Contracting company for Comcast or for Comcast.

Or if you worked as an Engineer for Ford, A loading dock supervisor for Scott Gas or as a Billing Specialist for Beaumont Hospital.

These are jobs my friends and I have had. We all did well during these times.

America did well during these times. Reagan had the largest peace time GDP growth ever in history.

We need to start asking is your life getting better or worse under Obama than it was under Bush.

Obama needs to start taking responsibility for the nation he leads.

Repeat this lie all you want. It doesn't get any truer.

The 9-10% unemployment rate we've got now has been building for a decade. We saw declining job creation growth rates every single year Bush was in office, and it's gotten worse since the subprime derivatives crash.

From a policy perspective the federal government should have exactly two priorities right now:

1) Getting the private sector to start hiring again
2) Creating short- and medium-term jobs themselves until such time as the private sector gets their heads out of their *****

Anybody who stands in the way of those goals - say, for instance, a group in Congress whose only priority seems to be slashing government spending no matter what impact it has - does not have the country's best interests in mind.

I don't understand what role the government should take in private sector hiring.

Quite frankly, businesses learned to be more efficient when the economy took a dump.   There's no reason to move back to inefficiency.   So, if you don't need workers, why would you hire workers?   Makes no sense.

Now, if the government could somehow spur businesses to grow, or even create an atmosphere where new businesses would open, you've got something going on.
