Marriage has changed many times throughout history.
Such as . . . ?

Ok. So what? Marriage is still a long recognized right. In some states that right is being denied to same sex couples.
A long recognized "right" for a man and a woman.

Same sex couples have not been long be recognized as anything.    If they were even recognized, it was as an anomaly.

Face it, the Constitution or our founding fathers weren't addressing SSM.     Times have changed, even from the 70s, so rulings might be different.

But, as I said, stop using "long been recognized" or "tradition" in your arguments.   It's counterproductive to what you're seeking.

I'm not arguing that marriage has traditionally included same sex couples. I'm arguing that marriage is a right that is being denied to same sex couples (in all but 7 states).

Then stop using "long been recognized" or "tradition" in your arguments.

Again, it depends on how strong a "right" marriage is.  The SC essentially relegated marriage to "minor" right status in 1972 in the Baker case by implicititly ruling that it was not subject to 14th amendment protection.

Marriage has changed many times throughout history.

You keep dancing between 2 areas.

1 Marriage is fluid and changes.
2 Marriage is a clear Constituional right.

This seems like a clear vote for "Let the people of each state decide".

Why? Marriage has been a long recognized right. The fact that homosexuals and interracial couples have been denied that right doesn't change that fact.

You keep trying to tie interracial and SSM together. There is one clear difference in that the government has always defended families and SS couples cannot have children.

This is why blacks are so opposed to SSM. They feel it lessens their history of oppression.

I'm not arguing that they are the same. Mike seems unable to comprehend that a right can be long recognized while at the same time exclude a group that should be included.

And still no one has given a halfway decent argument for not allowing same sex marriage. I don't understand why anyone cares what someone else does in their love life.

It's not about what other people do in their love life.

It's about redefining a very basic tradition that has been at the root of human culture since the dawn of civilization into something it's never been before, just to placate a small but loudly whiney special interest group.
6/1/2012 2:35 PM
Why not placate them? If they want to be married, what harm does it do to allow it?
6/1/2012 2:39 PM
Well it throws thousands of years of human culture and social norms out the window.

Clearly, two things you have little regard for, since you seem to be all about the here and now.

The reason is the people in 36 states have voted for it.

This isnt some offbeat idea. This is what the people have ALWAYS VOTE FOR.

I know that the LGBT defenders like to dismiss this, but we are a government of the people.
