My sh*t doesn't work in the playoffs Topic

Ok I give up. I've made the playoffs 23 times in 43 seasons, including two just finished. I've never made the World Series...not even the league championship series! I feel like I've got a good handle on the game but I just cannot win in the playoffs. Just finished two division winning seasons followed by 3 and outs in the play-in round.

I am 53-77 career in the playoffs...almost 400 games over .500 in the regular season. What am I doing wrong? Are my payrolls too low? Do I need more stars? Do I need to change tactics?

I can relate.  I'm 19-31 in the playoffs.  Playoffs seem to be based mainly on luck.  Sometimes it goes your way, other times it doesn't.  Eventually it's bound to go your way... I hope.

While the short series does provide random results, it's pitching.   A team with 5-6 really good pitchers can run thru the playoffs.  You don't need a 10 deep staff in the playoffs.

Mike will tell you how wrong I am in a second because being the current champ in 2 worlds isn't enough for him, but it's not just pitching. You have to remember in the regular season you see a lot 4th and 5th starters and and really weak starters on bad teams. In the playoffs when you almost always face studs having a few stud bats matters. The best hitters seem to be able to hit everyone whereas good, not great hitters tend to feast off of bad pitching and will go silent against studs. In short winning in the regular season is about a strong 1-25. Winning in the playoffs is more about having the strongest 1-15.

I assume you're in 'tard worlds but what you're saying is somewhat correct.   Depth isn't important in the playoffs.   The players you can't carry during the regular season, the 43 dur position player or the 27/12 pitcher can help a ton in the playoffs.

Nonetheless, my first two WS titles were won with no stars.  There are a million ways to skin a cat.

This is very true. Just won the WS in Satchel Paige (shouldn't have, got very lucky) and during the playoffs I basically only used five pitchers (I had 9 on the playoff roster). Those five guys pitched 178 out of my teams 191 playoff innings.

Good hitting helps too of course, but don't get discouraged. The playoffs have a whole lot of luck involved. Shorten up your pitching staff, and bring in a couple extra position players (pinch runner, an extra defensive sub or pinch hitter, etc) and hope for the best. It gets frustrating sometimes but it's the way it is.

Weren't you kicked out of Evangeline for using an alias to build your team?

nope. bought the alias to respond to attacks in the league forums. never used it. I won Titles in 4 different Worlds so your old arguments about winning in the same World have been outdated for quite a while.

I find that to be successful in the playoffs requires a ton more game planning and matchup analysis.  Tweaking your game-plan to match your opponent's strengths and weaknesses.  Sometimes pitching lesser P if your opponant is weaker or strong V/R or V/L.  Stealing more or less, depending on catchers as well.

I do some of this during the regular season but not every game.  In the playoffs I do it every game.
