How to tell how many Arbitration eligible yr left? Topic

I just took over a team and am trying to figure out how to tell how many more years my players have of arbitration eligibility.  Can someone teach me how to tell?  I don't want to sign guys to long term deals before I have to.

Look at his contract history - the seasons that he's making more than the league minimum, and a coaches name is listed next to the money amount are the years he's either been signed through arbitration or through a FA offer beyond his rookie contract.

After how many years in the majors are players not arbitration eligible though?

6 seasons of arbitration.

Look at how many seasons he's served (its near the top right of his player's page)

After 3 full seasons, he'll eligible for arbitration for the first time.  After 4 seasons, he'll likely ask for more in arbitration (scrubs who don't play much often ask for just the minimum), after 5 seasons he'll ask for the largest amount in arbitration.  After 6 ML seasons, he's eligible for free agency, though you can look him up to a long term deal prior to that.  Important to note, that its ML service time, not professional service time.  Some guys will spend 4 seasons in the majors, then the rest of their career in the minors.  They'll come up for arbitraiton each season that you keep them on the 40 man roster, but they won't accure ML service time if they're playing in the minors.

Little help please.

http://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=4909447 is available for arbitration.  He is asking 6 million in arbitration.  Or a long term contract of 4 years at 6,250,000 a year.  I don't want to tick him off and have him go to FA.  He is at 4 ML years.  Do I have one more year before I need to sign him long term or should I sign him long term now?

You've got another arb.

Can I sign him long term next season then?m  Or do I risk not being able to sign him long term?

Sorry.  You've got another arb before the 3rd arb.   So, yes, you can arb him this season and long-term next.

Three min salaries and 1.7m(which was his first arb).

Is there an easy way to figure who I should sign long term and who I should let go to arb?

Do I need to just offer what they are asking in arb to not risk ticking them off?

As a general rule, once they show 5 years in BL service time, it's time to offer LT.

Keep guys who are good L-T and let replaceable guys leave after 3 arbs

If they're replaceable, you should probably trade or release them after 1 or 2 arbs.

Yep.  I've got about a 1.5m threshold before replaceable guys get replaced.   That's not 3 arb territory.

That works too

A reasonable strategy might be to give a 4 or 5 year LT contract to a middling prospect before their first Arb. It might turn out cheaper overall. ESP if this person is strictly a power hitter and he will be 30 yrs old after this scenarios 5th yr is up.
