Draft Pick: Roll the dice at #1? Topic

Holding the #1 pick, I'm staring at a reasonably weak draft pool.  One pitcher jumps out as the obvious choice.  Huge durability/stamina, which normally I don't care about, but couple it with killer control and a 100 projected vR and suddenly I start paying attention.

The downfall - he is 18 and has a 65/69 health.

What are the chances he makes it to the bigs anywhere close to his projections?  Do you take him, or default to a more consistent pick - with way less upside?

(Alternatives are another possible ace - with 60 health (doh); or a couple good bats/gloves (no sure-fire hall of famers).)

If someone jumps out, why wouldn't you take him?

Not saying anything won't happen, but I've seen pitchers with 98 health get injured, and as low as 40 get through entire seasons. You should probably make sure you spend $ on training and medical, though.

I try to avoid pitchers with a health rating that low.  It seems as though pitchers with lower health ratings are way more prone to injury that position players with low health ratings; and if he gets hurt early in his development, gets set back, never reaches his potential... its a waste of a number one pick.

Suppose I'm curious if I'm just a baby - which I know you will say I am, because thats the shtick - but also whether others have observed the same thing (pitchers prone to injury), or if I'm just falling victim to small sample size

If he stands out, nanu, he's the obvious choice for me.  I have not noticed pitchers being more likely to be hurt than hitters.

I think its hard enough to find solid SP's..  Not taking a a stud SP becuase of a 65-70 HLTH rating would be foolish especially if there is a large drop of between him and the next guy on your board... Lets say he does get injured, would he still be comparable to the other options even with a hiccup in his development?

Another option is taking the guy who is least likely to sign and trying your luck next season..

I currently have 37 pitchers on my BL rosters.   6 are below 69 in health.   I don't pay much attention to health when I'm dealing with stud players but I have found that pitchers with health in the 40s(and below) are problematic.

IOW, if he's league average, I might go "Bah, 65 health.   What else can I get?"   But, if he "jumps out" at me, 65 health isn't a problem.

I feel confident that pitchers and middle infielders have more major injuries than everyone else.  But take the standout; 60 isn't that bad, and with 20 training and 18 medical you may well get back any lost ratings through the injury "bug."

69 Health is not an issue.

I have a different view of health than a lot of people.

I am more afraid of 90+ health as they don't get injured unless it's a season ender (in my experience, which crushes development).
The low health guys get a lot of small injuries, but they probably need the rest anyway so I don't really care.

The sweet spot for me is from about 50-80, but I won't disqualify a guy outside that range.
