At the end of the day, all 32 owners aren't, under any circumstances, going to field the best team possible every day.   If they were, average payroll would be 130m and there would be no draft, IFA or prospect budgets.   Because, if you're putting the best out there every day, you don't need them.

MWR force owners to balance the present and the future.   Worlds without them allow owners to play 100% for the future and that means 33 wins and 50m prospect budgets.    If you're bothered that a team wins 70-72 games for several seasons, I'm not sure what to say.     The average team wins 81.   Every game has a winner and a loser.

I'm sure you would consider this tanking.

I'm out of it at game 150.   If I have no games that affect the playoffs, I don't play the guys signed beyond the current season.   Why?  Not necessarily to lose games(although I'm less concerned with winning than I am about what follows this) but because I don't want some devastating injury to a guy who will be under contract next season.   I don't sign TC players but I play my prospects and/or my AAAA-types.

This is how I tank

I consider this type of thing reasonable strategy.  Guarding against injury is a good investment.  In fact, one thing I do fairly regularly is sign some guys during the last 5-10 games (if my roster can handle it) from the FA scraps and get my roster rested heading into the playoffs, or to guard against injury if I'm not going into the playoffs (actually in either case).  When the regular season is over I release them again.  Usually cash at the end of the season has no useful purpose anyway, so spending $250K on 5-7 guys is worth it if I can get my regulars back to 100%.

Sometimes I'll do that by call-ups of guys that won't necessarily be a part of my long-term plans.

Hey, brian, I know what you think of a commissioner who tanks.  You've made that abundantly clear.  Now I'd like to hear your opinion on a commissioner who was not very good at the game, in fact outright sucked at it, but is making a sincere effort to improve and whose team in each of the worlds he commishes is improving every season, and who is consistently sitemailing owners with far more experience to ask for advice, and who is good at the actual commissionering part of commissionering (Cal Ripken will be set to push the button within 24 hours of rolling for the second straight season), and who is well-liked by the other owners in his worlds, but has a few of those seasons in the 50's and 60's (and even a 40's) on his record from when he wasn't very good at the player evaluation aspect of the game?  What would your opinion on that commissioner be, because I just described myself, and I legitimately base my self worth on the opinion of strangers on the internet.

Lol I wasn't even talking about you. But I do find it tough to see how anyone cant win 70 games with out trying. There are just to many ways to see what it takes to win for me to make excuses for losing consistently.

Play in tougher worlds.    You'll find that it's harder to win 70 games without trying in those.
2/19/2015 3:34 PM
You and I both know that's not the case 70 games should be fairly easy unless you play aaa or aaaa guys.

BTW, if you have owners playing C at SS, just drop that world.   There are hundreds of ways to tank.   Anyone doing that is probably too stupid to figure out less obvious ways.

Do you really want me to?

Sure.   When you find a "questionable" player, I can guarantee that I'll show you the same type of player on one of my winning teams.

Here's one of the worst pitchers from the HON team.  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Cookie Lorenzo   Having played against me, you know 40s control doesn't scare me.    He had near league average splits and two pitches over 80.    And he only pitched 53 innings.

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Raul Ordonez was a little bit of an experiment.   51 control, 55 VL, league average VR(71) and  pitches of
87 84 57 42
.  Thought I'd see what he could do because he reminded me of a RH Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: George Cannon from my Coop team.   Well, he's no George Cannon.

You can ask Mike...before I started sitemailing him, my ideas of player evaluation and money management were horrible.  They still aren't great, but I'm getting closer.   It had nothing to do with tanking.  In my case, it's more a matter of I was grossly overvaluing mediocre players, and many seasons I've been right up against the cap by the time the rule 5 came about.  So then it became trading away contracts and attaching prospects, etc.  So it wasn't tanking, it was a gross lack of understanding of the game.
