Prospect without options traded Topic

I just traded for a prospect reliever who has spent all five of his pro seasons in the minors. However, he is out of options, after his original owner (not the one I traded with) put him on the 40-man in just his second season.

When I went to assign this player to my Triple-A team (he was at Triple-A previously), the computer-generated message says he may only be assigned to the major league club due to contract obligations. I would rather keep this player at Triple-A for the rest of the season.

Do I have any recourse other than putting him through waivers, which seems obscene?

No, you have to clear him through waivers.

That sucks, but I understand.

It doesn't make any sense, though, does it? why would a guy in the minors have to go through waivers to stay in the minors, just with another franchise?

I think if a draftee is given a BL contract he goes on the 40 as soon as he gets his cap.
