what the deal with this SP? Topic

Jay Whitehill

His ratings are much better than how he pitches, so whats the deal?

He only has two big league pitches.  You could have a crappy defense.  Im not sure of the exact dimensions of St Louis either.

Check his career stats too.  His ratings indicate he should be pitching better... but apparently not.

10 home runs in 26 innings is the problem. His last 3 years shows he's more a 4.5-5.0 ERA type of pitcher. He'll eventually get towards that. But 10 home runs in 26 innings with a good GB/FB ratio is just bad luck.

What's his defense like? With velocity that low he's going to be pitching to contact a lot, and with a defense that makes a lot of (-) plays his ERA might be artificially inflated.

Defense can't stop the long ball 10 HOME RUNS IN 26 INNINGS.

St Louis is -1 -1 -1 to the outfield.  I would suggest maybe getting a catcher with a better pitch calling then Placido Osuna especially given that he has 3 pitches that are subpar.  Outside of that you should see his HR/AB ratio creep closer to the 1/10 of his career.  I would also suggest switching your 2b and CF given that your 2b has a 89 range and CF only has an 81 range.  Outside of that your fielding seems about average, not horrible and anything that would drastically hurt him.

And the GB/FB rating suggests that is an outlier. I would expect this guy to eventually have one of those 1.2 WHIP, >.220 OAV seasons that result in good wins and ERA (assuming other things about the team) and a Cy nomination. He'll also have a bunch of league average seasons and a couple clunkers. This season, with 10 HOMERS in 26 innings might be one of the crappy ones.
