Newbie question RE: Evaluating Hitters Topic

I'm new to Hardball Dynasty and would love to hear about how HBD veterans evaluate hitting talent.

Right now, I am looking at Contact, Power, Vs.L, Vs.R, Batting eye, etc., but I would like to come up with a formula that gives more weighting for the most important categories.  I threw a workable formula together for pitchers based on a previous forum thread but hitters has been a bit more challenging.

Thanks for the help guys...I am really enjoying the game so far!

Its different for every owner considering that people have different preferences about how to build a team and play in different parks, but I think that most people would agree that splits are the most important giving more weight to the VsR. As far as the rest of the ratings go, it is up to you to figure out depending on how you want to build your team to suit your park. I know that this is not going to help you much, but it is about the best answer that I can give. Now get ready for a ton of different answers. Take bits and peices of each and come up with your own philosophy.

One thing to consider is that in a typical world you will face around 60-65% RHP, so you'll want to put more of a weighted emphasis on the vsR split.  Unless you're looking at a particular guy as primarily a platoon player who will be facing mostly RHP or LHP, in which case you may want to adjust the weights for vsL and vsR accordingly.

a thing that helped me a lot was the player search feature. take a look at a guy's ratings, then his statistics, and you can begin to get a rudimentary understanding of how the engine works.

order of importance for me:

vsR
Power
Eye
vsL
Contact

I also look at my park and their push/pull rating to try and make sure my guy tends to hit it to the shorter fence if there is one...i also weight lead off guys differently, but for the most part those are my priorities.

I look at it a lot differently.   Of course, VR is more important than VL and a poor V number renders a player pretty much useless in my opinion.   After that, I ask "What does he bring to the table?"    You've got contact, power, speed, baserunning(the often forgotten rating) and eye.    I want plus numbers in at least two of those categories.  I can live with 80 contact, 0 Power and 80 eye.   This player brings the ability to put the ball in play and draw walks.   If he's got speed/baserunning, he's an All-Star despite the fact that he'll never hit a homer.   I'll take an 80 contact/80 power with 32 eye.  He'll hit for average with pop.  You can't build a team around eight .280/.310/.450 guys but you can damn sure use them.

In short, putting more emphasis on one of the 5 categories I listed could leave you with a one dimensional team.  Some owners are fine with that.  I'm not.

Speaking of one-dimensional teams, whatever happened to swamphawk. Haven't seen him in the forums in forever.

I put the most weight on the vs, and like others have said, vsR being more important.
Control and Eye I weigh equally. Sure, you can have great success with an 80 contact, 30 eye guy...but I think you can have the same success with a 30 contact, 80 eye guy. The first one will get called out on strikes a lot, but put the ball in play and rarely walk...the second will swing and miss a lot but walk more.

Power is the biggest modifier for me of how I evaluate a guy. Someone with little to no power, I am going to want huge numbers everywhere else, and probably either great speed/baserunning, or to be a Gold Glove shortstop type. Someone with huge power, I will let all other numbers go lower. I wouldnt normally play a guy with 40 contact, 45/50 splits and 70 eye....but add in 100 power and you are looking at a 40+ home run threat.

SOLID advice. Some of the best you'll get regarding evaluating hitters, IMHO.

BTW, what was your formula for evaluating pitchers?

If you can get a hitter with an outstanding (80's+) vR the other stuff is negotiable.  Generally I look at Power and Eye, then at the other factors.  contact is least important to me.

Here's what I am using for pitchers: (CON*6 + vR*5 + P1*4 + vL*3 + STA*2 + VEL*2 + GB*1) / 23.  Thanks for all of your help guys.

That's the total number of * each category.
