How important is ML hitting coach? Topic

Is having a good Major League hitting coach important? I would guess not nearly as important as a good pitching coach, as hitters are often fully developed early on as compared to pitchers?

In my opinion there is very little gained between good coaches and great ones...definitely not normally worth the 2-3 million dollars extra they cost.

I've always assumed that good coaches help their "fully developed" players maintain their skills.  A poor hitting coach might cause some early regression with your veterans.

Yeah, but we are all guessing and assuming about the roles of coaches.  WIS should either specifically define how a coach impacts player development/team performance or eliminate them completely.  Right now, it just seems random and arbitrary...and it's annoying.

So hire some bad ones and let us know how it works out.

There is no way WifS should tell us exactly how every component of this game works.

Mike, I appreciate your record in HBD and recognize you as an excellent player of this game, but could you post something constructive rather than a dismissive and sarcastic remark?  I am genuinely confused on the worth of coaches based on the ratings vs performance of players/teams in the leagues I am in.

Further, you employed a logical fallacy...my post addressed the role of coaches, you extended it to include every component of the game.

I have read your posts over the years and I know you sometimes answer people in this way, but it would be helpful if on this one, you shared a little of your experience to help out those who are confused.  Thanks.

Sure, since you were mostly polite about it.

Coaches do not affect performance AT ALL.  Throw that out.
Coaches do affect the development of learned skills.  Contact, splits, throwing accuracy, etc, etc.
Much like cshewood, I think the difference between a 75 coach and an 83 coach is neglible.
However, if you hire a 43 when the average is 78, you will notice a lack of development and/or regression.
Because of this, I believe, like tec, that coaches slow the natural regression of learned skills.
Hope this helps.

Now, had you asked this before suggesting that WifS explain exactly how coaching works, I'd have been happy to answer.   Your initial post seemed a bit whiney and demanding.   You appeared to be whining because you didn't know and demanding that WifS tell you.   I believe you have to learn some things by playing the game.  All that said, my opinion of the coach engine comes from 60+ season of playing and observing.  Not only my team but other teams in the same world.   Am I 100% certain that I am 100% correct?  No.  But I think I do a very good job of getting drafted players to the bigs.

Thanks for your answer.  I have asked WIS in the past with no translateable answer that I could employ into a strategy.  If you wish to view my initial post as a bit whiney and demanding, you have every right.  I'm really speaking out of frustration.  Appreciate your response.

WifS didn't answer you for one of two reasons:  1.  Sometimes their answers make no sense.  Not sure if it's intentional or not.    2.  They may not want to tell you how every component of the game works.

Either way, you're welcome.

My, my, the kinder and gentler Mike!!

A common misconception is that I'm rude and short to everyone.   If people can ask a question without sounding like a 9 year old girl wanting to know why she can't have a pony, I can answer nicely.    But WifS is populated with grown men who sound like 9 year old girls every time the game doesn't play exactly how they think it should.

I sometimes I marvel at the questions too. Besides I was just pulling your chain.

I just thought maybe you'd never seen it before.  The best questions I get are sitemailed.

Not that it's what happened in this thread, but the process generally is...

1)  I thought it was going to work this way
2)  It really worked out that way
3)  I'm mad about it, what can I do
4)  Wait, there's a public forum on this site, right?
5)  Commence the whining, complaining, and demand for change
6)  Receive sarcastic comments in response to your whining and complaining, giving the rest of us a good chuckle
7)  Realize that your idea for change would have other effects that someone's already thought of, thus the lack of implementation for your idea
8)  Move on with a greater knowledge of the game, having more accurate expectations of what's to come next time

you should read the Hoops Dynasty threads...that's pretty much the process in place over there.
