If they have any value, use them. If they have no value, you aren't getting anything in trade. Giving up useful players for nothing but cap space is a losing proposition. Half the HBD universe is in perpetual rebuild mode. That's why people like me can make the playoffs 2/3 of the time. If I can figure out how to squeak out 88 wins, I feel like I've got about a 95% chance of making the playoffs. I often beat out an 84 win team that traded a couple of long-term, useful players so they could "rebuild".
I'm going to say this is partially correct.
Giving up useful players for nothing but cap space is a losing proposition - yes.
Giving up useful players for cap space if you use that cap space to obtain something more useful to you - better.
And sometimes, albeit rarely, that means floating a bad contract on the waiver wire to see if you get a bite. eg; if the turd is Long A material and, by some miracle, you get a bite, and you then turn that money around to obtain a #3 starter as an FA, then mission accomplished.
Cap space for the sake of cap space is a waste.
