I was shocked to hear that somebody disregards under 75.  Who gives a damn what the individual numbers say as long as they add up to a good player?

I wasn't.   People have been saying "70+ control only" for years.   Pitching ratings are too complicated to tell a 55 control pitcher to F-off.

I've had several good seasons out of a short reliever with 44 control but splits in the 90s. Picked him up on waivers originally, lucky me.

I've had a couple of serviceable major league pitchers with 40-ish control but good splits (nowhere near the 90s, mind you). Probably a lot of people can say the same. The point, though, is you have to hunt for the success stories, because I've had even more guys with those numbers who weren't major-league quality.

I bet I could find more failures with 90 control and 40ish splits.

Exactly...Marginal control don't mean a bad pitcher. You have to look at the ENTIRE package.. splits, Pitch quality etc etc.

The problem is that sometimes people will use a 50 control guy who would still suck if he had 90 control.  This is not a recipe for success.

I'm calling this guy up after the pm2 game tonight...whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx.  Whenever I tried to shop him in a trade, nobody would want any part of him.  To me, he looks like a guy who can give 250 IP with an ERA in the low-mid 4's.  His vL is a mild problem, so I can't be entirely confident of this, but I am very curious to see how he does as a ML'er.

I'll take his S16 all day.   1.49 WHIP with 4.13 ERA over 122 innings.

I can show you a staff of pitchers with 70+ control, 65+ vsL, 70+ vs R, 70+gb/fb and at least two pitches 70 and higher... with an ERA of over 6.  You never truly understand pitching.  You just plug guys in and hope for the best!
9/13/2010 5:38 PM
Well, that staff would need some help to have an ERA over 6...stuff like 0% fatigue usage, a C at SS, coors field, whatever.  Under normal conditions they are extremely unlikely to do that poorly.

I wish that were the case my friend... Salt Lake City, which is 1's across the board.  No catchers at short either.

I *prefer* better control because I hate giving up bases for free. hate it.

But I'm not absolutely stuck on it. I can live with 4.something walks per 9 if the dude is throwing up sub .200 OAV.

Sorry, can't hyperlink at work.

I get crap all the time that it's Wichita that's making him an All Star. All I know is that he's a winner. So they can bite me.

Umm, you have a few guys badly underachieving in less than half a season but your team ERA is still under 5.
9/13/2010 5:56 PM
Screw him. Acknowledge my overachieving pitcher and the managerial brilliance in bringing out the best in him. Stat!
9/13/2010 6:13 PM
Your pitcher sucks.  Probably a glitch in the engine.
