How to define success in HBD: Braves vs. Marlins Topic

the pirates turned a profit of like 5 mil ( according to their books) split among however many people take a piece of that pie, even if you put that money back in what does that get them a  crappy SP? there is a good reason football is the # 1 sport, the cap ( and every  team has a shot at every player through the draft) it gives every fan hope that their team can turn things around quickly, even if they don't there is always hope next year

the pirates could be run better( the draft record was horrible for awhile) but they have gotten better and have added a lot of talent in the last 3 drafts, some trades ( mainly the jason bay tradewhere they got bryan morris) and an solid IFA this season, their is light at the end of the tunnell, unfortuletly that light is about three years away, when jamison talion, stetson allie, tony sanchez, bryan morris, the IFA ( who i can't remember his name) and hopefully anthony rendon join the big club with mcutcheon, alvarez, tabata and walker they might just have a chance ( at least that is the hope of the pirate fans), but we have heard this before

And they made profits of 15 mil in 2007 and 2008.  It's not so much the amount of $ they are not spending, but the fact that they are not spending it. They are, very simply, more interested in making money than fielding a winning baseball team.

There's also the argument that you spend money to make money.  Steinbrenner opened his wallet, the Yankees won more games, and more fans came to games.  I do understand that the Yankees have more fans than Pittsburgh does, so it's easier to do that, but Pittsburgh hasn't shown a willingness to try, despite collecting the money the Yankees give them.

I do recognize that the Pirates have spent more money on draft picks and IFAs.  We will see if they start spending more money on player payroll when they have a legitimate shot to win.

Steinbrenner lost money most seasons.

And, by the way, I run my own business.  I never make a profit yet somehow stay in business.  Figure it out.

Sure he lost money but the net worth of the franchise skyrocketed making up for that.

even if they add 20 mil in payroll to the team they had this seaosn , what does that get them at best 3 decent players or 2 solid ones ( and that is stretching it) do they even sniff .500? highly doubtfull, now in 3 years when the kids arrive  around some peices they have now, that a different story, if they eat that money and don't spend it then, i will have a major problem with that. i have no problem with the owners wanting to basically not loose money for the last 3 years , since they were going to suck anyways, as long as they invest in signing draft pick above slot,  do what they can internationally ( which they have done so far) and then when the time is right spend some money. I think that is the only chance a team like the pirates has of ever competing in the current state of major league baseball

Didn't you get booted from Moneyball under the "Failing to compete" rules?     If so, yeah, Pittsburgh sounds about right for you.  Although Baltimore would have been an acceptable option also.
Not yet - I am still mathematically alive, I just need to go something like 20-5 down the stretch.

When fans make excuses for their team losing for 20 straight seasons, they're giving ownership the OK to keep it up.   The Pirates are setting records for prolonged suckitude.   And you're making excuses for them.

If they spend money in 2-3 years, then I get that they're trying to make up for not competing for so long.  But they owe it to their fans to at the very least spend the money they make now - at least show you care.  An organization that is run as poorly as they are does not deserve to make money.

you can't polish a turd into a diamond overnight, that's the kind of thinking that gave us derek bell, pat mears, matt morris, kevin young and a host of other washed up players who pocketed millions of dollars and gave nothing in return,  The pirates have turned a corner in regards to drafting the players they should draft and then paying them  (which btw is not going over well with some of the bigs clubs, they don't like the way the pirates are paying overslot for guys to aquire 1st round talent in later rounds, because they are willing to pay the players demands to keep them from going to college) no decent FA will sign with them right now, all they can get are the guys no one else wants. They  are starting to do things right, but it's a slow process, that can be easily derailed with a couple bad signings

in a couple years once the get to a point where they are competative, if they keep pocketing the money because they are satisfied with a competative team, then beleive me, i will be screaming foul as hard as anyone, but i think they are trying to do it the right way for once

I dont know how accurate you are about their drafting abilities. I dont see quality MLB talent out of Stetson Allie.
