How to define success in HBD: Braves vs. Marlins Topic

The Pirates haven't broken .500 since 1992.   I think they've only lost less than 90 four or five times since then.  That's ridiculous.   I don't care how slow the process is.  That's just ridiculous.

I dont know how accurate you are about their drafting abilities. I dont see quality MLB talent out of Stetson Allie.
baseball america had allie rated as the #8 prospect headed into the draft, and the pirates got him in the 2nd round, because of their willingness to meet his demands of 2.25 mil  a HS pitcher who throws 98mph  and was considered to have the best arm in the draft ( only thing holding him back was some command issues) which hopefully can be corrected) is a pretty good prospect, whether or not he pans out is  a whole different story

most of those years you are right, i am am right there with you, they sucked and mismanaged every aspect of the process over and over again, but, it is looking different the last couple years. they just have to keep up with the good things they have been doing and spend when the time is right . going out and signing derek lowe and adam dunn doesn't even get them to .500, ( not that those players would even consider pittsburgh at this point)

Didn't they sign a couple of pitchers from India?    Personally, I don't think that's such a bad idea.   It's just that it might be 40 years before India starts cranking out BL ballplayers.  By then, the name "Pirates" might not be the only one they relate to baseball.

And, quite frankly, when people in Toronto (hardly a hotbed of baseball success since the strike) say things like, "At least we're not the Pirates" you know a team has been poorly mismanaged.
Thanks, Mr. Doublenegative!!

Well, the fact that they are paying over slot for draft picks is encouraging that the current regime (or is it the same collection for all these years?) is willing to spend money.

Of course, spending money isn't going to help if it's spent stupidly.
different regime , new ownership and new people in the front office major changes.

That helps a lot.

What a pointless comparison. "Would you rather run the team that's made the playoffs almost every year and has a title, or the team that barely makes the playoffs once a decade but has won one more Series?"

Make it Cleveland (seven playoff appearances in those 17 seasons, but no titles) vs Florida, or Boston (nine playoff appearances and two WS titles) vs Atlanta, and it might be a debate.
Well, I thought those were the two "extreme" cases in terms of WS per playoff appearances.

Anyone would choose the Yankees or the Red Sox.  Multiple titles and consistent playoff appearances are ALWAYS the choice.''

I've concede that the Indians might have been a better "good, but never over the hump" team, but they've been bad here and there, too.  The Braves have always been at least in the hunt.
O rly? As an HBD owner I'd much rather have 13 playoff appearances and one title in 17 seasons than nine and two in 17. The first is a contender just about every year; the second is only a contender half the time.

If you're trying to generate a debate, it's probably a good idea not to assume you know how other people think.

Yet, as I said, almost everyone discussion I get into about "HBD success" turns into the "I play to win the WS.  If I can't win the WS, I don't care how many games I win,"

Of course, those discussions are usually with tankers who are defending their 51-111 season with a 23m payroll.
