assuming a catcher (or whoever)...and all other attributes being equal...would you rather have a (contact/pwr/lh/rh/eye) 40/80/80/80/80...or 80/80/80/80/40...so basically it's a case of contact versus eye...i personally would take the higher eye/ lower contact myself...i think you can get away w/ lower contact (even into the 30's sometimes depending on other numbers)...but low eye keeps the player off base too much w/ the low walks...anyway...just trying to get a feel from the masses...thanks...charles

The answer to this question is always "It depends on your team".    Too many of either type is not ideal.

Given that hits can advance runners farther than walks can, I would take the contact over the eye with all else being equal.  But Mike also makes an excellent point . . . you want a good balance of player types in your lineup.  If you're lacking a high OBP guy at the top of your lineup, you might want to go with the high eye guy instead.

As a counterpoint, using conventional baseball logic(and assuming it applies to HBD), walks up the pitch count.  Higher pitch counts means shorter outings and the ability to get to middle relief(which should be weaker).

Personally I would go with the Eye over Contact if all else was equal.  The purpose of my hitters is to step up to the plate and not make an out.  If I have a lineup of .400+ OBP guys I have done my job.

Some say a hit is not an out.  And a guy with 80/80/80/80 ratings will get some hits.

I'll take the mix of players that can score the most runs.

You can have a .500 OBP and never score a run.

Depends on the player, usually take the eye, but given the example i'd take the contact.

In this instance I'd take the contact. With 80 power, I want to give that guy a better chance to hit HRs. I don't care if he walks.

Also a good point.    If a guy has 30 power/splits, you'd be happy for him to keep his bat on his shoulder.

Generally speaking, I'd lean towards the Contact in a hitter's park and Eye in a pitcher's park.

I would go eye hands down...  but I hardly care about contact at all.

For the most part, contact is simply an 'out type' rating. Basically the opposite of 'velocity' for pitchers. Batters with low contact will strikeout when they make an out more often, batters with a high contact will ground/fly/foul out more often. It does appear to me, based on a moderate amount of research, that it has a small batting average modifier built in, similar to 'pitches' for a pitcher. I would say a batter at the high end of the spectrum will have a batting average 20pts or so higher than one at the low end of the spectrum. Not a huge difference, but it is something.
In considering K-outs vs Ground-outs, the overall effect is pretty similar. Guys who strikeout don't ground into double plays. Guys who ground out, will hit into DPs, but can also reach via the error and move runners over occasionally. I would lean towards a high contact rating for fast players, because they will avoid DPs, and a low contact rating for slow players, because they will be DP machines otherwise.

And to answer you question about contact vs eye, eye is far more important. OBP is the name of the game. Get as much of it as you possibly can.
