Successful starter with only three pitches? Topic

Waiting for the season to roll so can't see his potential values as he is only going into his third season but his values now are:

Stam - 82
Control-52
vL - 57
vR - 68
Vel - 27
G/F - 81
1st P- 85
2nd P - 78
3rd P - 43

With only 3 pitches is he a long reliever or can he be successful with 2 good pitches and 1 below average pitch?

I don't think there is anything about that guy that makes up for his poor control

He's only in AAA right now - had a 4 ERA in AAA for the last 2/3rds of the season and a shade over 3 ERA in his stint in AA.  He should still see improvement - but if he improves to say high 50's in control, 5 more in each vL and vR and a bit more in each of his 3 pitches could he be a starter or is he more of long relief pitcher?

His pitches are fine; I have a CY Young winner with basically two pitches: 80, 69, 36. The problem is that with poor control, mediocre splits, and no velocity, your guy just isn't that good. I've thrown worse out there for their 3 pre-arb years, but it'll be trouble if he's pitching 150+ innings for you.

gotcha - thought he compared to this guy who has pitched in the majors the last two seasons with a 4.2 ERA and over 14 wins each season except for the number of pitched
Stam - 76
Control - 46
L - 59
R - 74
Vel - 27
G/F - 61
1st - 75
2nd - 81
3rd - 51
4th - 53
5th - 24

Just wasn't sure how much the lack of a 4th/5th pitch would hurt me as I would be very satisfied if he was a 4-4.5 ERA guy as a 4th/5th starter.

He is a 4th/5th starter or long reliever. Unlike a lot of people here, I dont think 57 control is awful by any means - especially with a high GB number. Two fly ball outs is the same as a walk and a double play.

This guy has a better splits and 4 useable pitches to the other guys 2. Hate anyone with control under 50, though.

OK - our budgets are now set so i can see his projected's

Stam - 91
Cont - 63
vL - 70
vR - 69
Vel - 30
G/F - 91
1st P - 96
2nd P - 88
3rd P - 52

Still just concerned with only 3 usable pitches he won't do well as a starter even with that stamina.

If he actually hit those ratings, he'd be good. But his vL and pitches have no shot to hit those projections.
