Who says coaches don't affect players development? Topic

Not sure if anyone has seen this before but in  GD Bryant, here's a prospect that is un-developing his glove. Its dropping by 2 each development cycle. Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Spike Gibbons.  I checked and his team has a fielding coach that has a fielding IQ of 2!.  LOL. 2. Wow.

Forgive me but sarcasm doesn't always come across well on the Internet, and I can't tell if the subject of this post was sarcastic or not. However, I can tell you that this phenomenon is well-documented and that coaches have everything to do with a young player gaining (or losing) points. If there is a coach who is just terrible, like in your example, he'll start teaching players bad habits and poor technique which will end up damaging their abilities.

Yes, the subject line was sarcastic, but the post was based on the fact that I've never actually seen a coach negatively affect a player that much before (dropping 9 points in glove catagory in just over 1/2 a season). Also of note (although maybe to only us unwashed masses - note: more sarcasm) is the fact fielding coaches also affect throwing accuracy in addition to glove work. Thought I would point it out to any one else that might be interested or not seen such an example before.

During the first several seasons of HBD, owners who didnt sign coaches were assigned the worst coach available and results like this were common.

Range and arm strength are physical attributes, influenced by the training budget.

Glove and arm accuracy are skill attributes, influenced by coaches.

Yes, this was called "learning the hard way".

The general consensus is that coaches affect learned skills.  The debate largely centers around the difference between 58 and 68(or whatever).

That's pretty jaw dropping.  I hadn't seen a player's attributes decline so rapidly without some sort of  outside reason, usually injury.  So, since we're on the topic, which coaches do everything place the highest priority on?

For me:  HC/PC, BC, then FI, followed by the others.

FI impacts all levels, whereas all other coaches only influence their own level.

FI is the most important coach because he affects your entire organization.

I don't know how others feel about them, but I care very little about my major league bench coach.  I'm not sure if they affect development at all.  The help menu mentions something about minor league bench coaches affecting development of all ratings, but only states that the major league bench coach takes over when the manager gets ejected.

FI, PC, HC, Bullpen, 1B/3B, Bench for the Majors.

Bench, PC, HC for the Minors.

I wouldn't say that I make BC a higher priority in the minors than PC/HC, but I do try to make sure they have a good rating in either Hitting or Pitching for exactly the reason you state above.

Thanks for the thoughts.  I'm probably putting too much emphasis on the BC and not enough on the FI.  I haven't been hiring poor FI's, but I had ranked them below BC's.

FI is one of the most oimportant coaching positions simply because there are rarely enough decent ones ot go around. On the other hand, it is fairluy easy to get a bench coach for close to minimum salary.

Define "decent".
