Player Injured Without Actually Playing Topic

Hey just throwing this out there because I've never seen it happen before in my limited experience.  I had a SP get injured for 252 days with shoulder surgery in a game, but thing is, he didn't even play in the game?  There was no mention of the injury in the box score, so I guess he got injured off the field?  Or it was from a previous game that didn't get diagnosed in game?  My world chat mentioned that they had seen it before for a few days, but I thought I'd throw it out there to see if anyone else has run into such a serious injury from off the field?

I've definitely seen injuries occur away from the field. I don't think I've ever seen one that long, but I've definitely seen them serious enough to warrant a DL stay. It adds a great layer of realism to the game IMO since in real life players get injured off the field all the time. Especially in this guy's case, I guess the story is he was deciding whether to just pitch through the pain and then decided he would get surgery and shut down his season; happens all the time in MLB.

Had a AAA 3b come up with a season long knee injury during the period between Spring Training and Opening Day a few seasons ago. It happens.

I sent a ticket when this happened to me (many fewer days) and this was exactly SiteStaff's response; he was trying to decide whether he could pitch or not.

Heck there are actually cases of MLB players being very seriously injured not in actual games.. Mark Fidyrch was shagging fly balls during BP and blew out his arm... went from Cy Young possible and Rookie of the Year to zippo (tried a couple of comebacks after surgery but NEVER really was the same). There are lots of cases..player getting caught up in the tarp while being unrolled or rolled up (not sure which), there have a couple of players injured in boating accidents (one even killed I think)...

And Bob Ojeda.

Olin was the one who was killed.

Yet, oddly enough, if he decided to "pitch thru the pain", he'd likely be pitching as though he didn't have an injury.

Because, y'know, he wouldn't be injured.

Want to add a level of realism to the game? Let me make the decision... I get to choose between letting my 85-rated pitcher have surgery and miss a season, with the possibility of him returning to his current form next season.... or I ask him to pitch thru it, but he pitches at a diminished capacity, with the possibility of killing him long-term.

THAT, would be kewl.

Yeah, I think I brought that up in the Suggestions thread once. This is the way it works (sort of) in HD, so I don't know why they couldn't put it into HBD. They spend so much time on cosmetic stuff like the Hall of Fame and new menu options, which are cool and all, but I wish they'd implement more gameplay features like this one to add dimensions to the game and give users more control.

That was a guy named Crews, I think. Pitched for the Dodgers. Bobby Ojeda was involved in thet crash too. I think he lost part of his scalp. Then later, Ojeda lost the tips of a couple of fingers while cutting his hedges with an electric hedge-trimmer. Off field incidents happen all the time. Ex-Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle died crashing his plane into a building. And what about that rookie pitcher last season that was killed by a drunk driver.

I lost some ex-ML guy to fill out my rookie league team the cycle after I signed him, before rookie league even started.  I think that's going past "realistic" and getting closer to Sparky deciding to make things difficult for me and my $20M training budget.

With the Fidrych reference, it was a knee injury during spring training drills, and he hurt his arm coming back too soon.

Amazing how realism is asked for by players, then complained about when it does happen....

Stat guru Bill James did a study on injuries a few years back after there was a lot of complaining about how many more injuries than normal were occuring. His study indicated that the incidence of injury was pretty consistent over the years. it was just the unexpectedness of injuries when they happen(they are never expected) and possibly a few more big names being injured, but the frequency was no different.

Maybe he accidentally stabbed himself with the pen he used to sign the contract?
