Does anyone have a sense of how much makeup contributes to a player's ability to obtain his projected ratings?  I feel like I have a good sense of how low/high makeup affects a player as he ages, but I don't have a very good idea of how much a really low makeup will keep a player from reaching his projections.

I'm looking at a HS C prospect who projects to con/pow/vL/vR/eye of 60/85/71/51/94, but he's only at 34/63/44/32/65 at the moment.

Thanks for the advice - have a great weekend.

besides the obvious "makeup makes you prettier" joke...I find guys with low makeup are more erratic in their development.  Some are fine while some totally miss their projections.  Think of the makeup rating as a "focuser."  ie the lower it is the more erratic the projections are and the higher the makeup the more precise they are.

"the lower it is the more erratic the projections are and the higher the makeup the more precise they are"

Not really.  That's a misleading description.

A better way to describe makeup is as a work ethic.  A player can have a lot of potential physical skills, but if he doesn't put in the effort to achieve his potential when he's young, or put in the effort to maintain it when he's older, then skills will not develop as fully as they could, and will tend to decline more quickly.

Understanding, or course, that makeup is just one a a number of factors that go into progressing towards a player's projections.

I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here.  It is my (perhaps incorrect) observation that it has little to do with the rapid development that occurs in the first three-four seasons after being drafted, or prior to the age of 22 in internationals.  However, there are a fair number of players that keep adding a point or two here or there for several seasons after the rapid development phase, and those players seem to have very high makeup.  So, while I think makeup is not a major player in development, I think it does have a role.  Others have disagreed with me on this point in the past and will probably do so shortly.

It's not "shortly" but I definitely disagree.  I've noticed higher make-up players developing "better".

I am a big believer in having a good makeup. Those guys seem to make better progress, hold their ratings longer, and recover from injury better. It's one of the  things I look at in a player I'm scouting, but not the most important. All other things being nearly equal, I'll take the guy with higher makeup

Makeup is also important as to how a player recovers from a ratings hit that resulted from an injury

I believe that's patience.

Patience plays a role in a player's ability to deal with adversity following demotions, injuries and lack of promotions.

However else I'm "down" on makeup, it and training budget seem to be by far the key determinants of rate and timing of ratings decline. It's critical to assess makeup when signing FA's in their 30s.

Not sure I agree. I prefer natural left.

I'd agree that this is a better description than the trash I posted.

he prefers the picture on the left because it reminds him more of his boyfriend.
