Why isn't this guy better? Topic

DonnNewman

I can't quite figure out why Newman doesn't hit more.  His offensive numbers are currently 91-60-81-71-71.  He's 25 and basically maxed out, except for Contact which projects to 100.  He might make 93.  All the same...those are nice numbers.  I wish his vL/vR splits were reversed...all the same he has nice numbers.  And basically he's had very close to those  numbers since he came up.

He has decent speed and patience, too.

He has twice been a Gold Glove RF'er and once made the All Star Team.  He has that going for him.

But he has a career .756 OPS and has never been over .786.  He has never hit above .270, and we play in an absolutely neutral park.

With that contact and those splits, I see a guy who should hit .290 and OPS .350+

What's missing?  Or am I delusional?

He looks ****** off probably just an attitude problem. :) But I agree with you, looks like you should be getting a little better numbers from him.

Small question (and maybe small factor)- who hits in front of (two spots) and behind him in your lineup?  My only theory is poor protection behind, and not enough base runners in front.

I don't think that the concept of batting order protection is built into the game engine.  And lack of runners on base when he comes to the plate would have no impact on his poor OPS.

SLG isn't that far off but the BA/OBP are.   Can't make sense of that.

My advice is to trade him away to a division rival, with your luck he'll likely start putting up MVP numbers after that.

Seriously though, his stats to this point reek of an enormous statistical anomaly. I know it's frustrating but he WILL turn it around... eventually.

What about this guy? He's always stumped me. I tried platooning him against righties only in a neutral park his final season with my team, and still nothing. I realize his contact is low, but it shouldn't make that big of a difference. Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Luis Fernandez

Booger your guy doesn't surprise me at all, especially with 2 years in Tacoma. I would expect him to be pretty dismal versus lefties, and just average versus righties.

Newman drinks a lot.

The guy's got a contact rating of 11 and only 73 power. You're really upset with a career OPS around .700?

Yup

Just be happy he is your Dave Kingman (Cecil Fielder to you younger guys) (Carlos Pena for you really young guys).  Except his BA is about 20 points to high.  I would expect .210 / .250 / .400 from him at best.

Newman update:  Moved him down in the lineup, from his customary lead-off slot.  Now batting 6th and 7th, depending on whether we're facing a lefty of righty.

In 7 games, he's gone 12-31, OBP of .424, has 5 doubles, 1 tater and 9 RBI.

Small sample, I suppose.  But at least he's hitting now.

And I probably just jinxed him!

60 power kind of sucks. But yeah, I would think he should be a little better. His ISO (SLG- BA) is about what I would expect it to be, but I would expect another 30 points of OBP or something.

I dunno, could be a big fluke, but his baserunning is pretty poor. Sometimes good speed and poor baserunning can be a curse as he might be getting thrown out trying to stretch plays. Still though, I can't imagine that's more than 5-10 extra outs per year, which doesn't account for the difference between his performance and what I would expect. I would chalk it up to statistical abberation and still project something like a .285/.360/.450 slash line going forward.

I was going to mention the average base running as well.  Not sure what the impact is, but I bet it does affect how well he performs.
