Without getting too deep into it, speed/range can be largely independent.   We had a long discussion about it in Bo Jackson.    The conversation turned to running down a flyball in the OF that was 50 feet away from the starting position.   I insisted, if Usain Bolt took a wrong step, that I could run down a ball that he couldn't reach(assuming I got a good jump on it).   leppykahn decided I was a 270 lb defensive lineman with great instincts and Usain Bolt was, well, Usain Bolt.   Here's what he determined:

I agree with you.  There is definitely something to getting a great jump on the ball.  I'm just picturing Bengie Molina having range like an average center-fielder...it just doesn't work for me.

This conversation makes me think - should there be two seperate ratings for range? Outfield range and infield range?  Because they are 2 entirely different things.  I was a middle infielder when I played, but I wouldn't trust myself to patrol CF for a team, mostly from the lack of experience playing there.  In this game, I put my 2B in CF when I'm giving my starting CF a day off, and I'm thinking it shouldn't be that easy.

Yeah, that was part of the discussion also.    In order to have great range in the OF, you have to have some speed.   Even the 5.0 forty leppy used isn't Bengie Molina speed.   But a rock with quick hands and antipation at 3B could have great range for a 3B.   It's generally one step over there.    HBD hasn't differentiated between the two.   A guy with 87 range and 0 speed could be an outstanding IF but shouldn't be an OF with 87 range.
