Here's a pitcher, signed as a 22 yr old:

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Willie Pineda

I think he's pretty much topped out now

What determines off-season development?  Does it have anything to do with the coaches at the particular level?

Both of those examples were 22 YO IFA's... Bud Ramirez was a drafted college SR; I think Ramirez will hit low to mid-70's splits, mid to high 80's control, maybe 80, 70, 45, 45 pitches

No way does he hit 70s splits.

Take about 5 off of each of those numbers is my guess.

Good question.  Sounds like something that needs it's own thread.

Off-season development is determined by training.    Physical ratings.    In-season development is determined by coaches and playing time.

Of course, natural limits(true projections) play a part.   And the medical bug does funny things with injured players.

With his makeup I am thinking he will not hit the projected control for sure but I do think he'll manage to be around 70/70 splits if I bring him up correctly and he does very well at each level.

Here's one of my guys that I found to be "most similar".

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Tyrone Harrelson

Your guy has much better make-up but I still think 70+ splits aren't possible for a 23 y/o in the low/mid 50s.

Since your guy was drafted #1 overall, I'll assume the guy who drafted him did his homework, and his potential was pretty good.  Here's my compe, 2 seasons in for a guy I drafted #3 overall.  He showed pretty strong gains from his first ST to his 2nd ST, and decent gains again when ST wrapped up a week ago.

Historical improvements combined w/ my original $16 mil college scouting projection tells me he's going to improve about 15-20 points in control & vL, perhaps a little more vR.

W/o knowing his true projections, I think its very possible he could settle into the 70ish range on his splits when all is said and done.

I agree with you, I just hope good coaching and training will help enough to make him at least GOOD.

Yeah, I'm hoping for a pretty big jump this season with a lot of playing time and good performance.

My guy has had a good career.   1147 IP, 1.33 WHIP, 4.17 ERA.   I expect, because of make-up, that your guy will settle in with 65 to 68 splits.    He'll be better but, if you're hoping for 1.10/3.25, I think you're going to be disappointed.
3/17/2011 8:47 AM
Yeah, I'll be disappointed..  But it's better than what I have had lately so when it's time for him to come up at the very least he'll be surrounded by equally as disappointing Pitchers that will make him look good.
