Dumbest Move You've Ever Made Topic

This is a re-enactment of me and ADMIN over that situation:

I have the speaking part.

My only response was this:

Only had one "Oh, crap" moment.  Was giving a contract extension to a veteran FA, speedy guy who was getting older.  Only wanted him around for one extra year but he wanted two.  So I backloaded the two years and meant to tack on a Mutual Option.  But as soon as I submitted the deal I realized I forgot the Mutual part of the contract.  He was still serviceable in that second year but nowhere near worth the $6M I paid him.

First time through, I thought "If I dont even make an offer to these arb guys, they'll go into free agency."

Three awful, over the hill LF's at 4.6 mil each later... I realized that wasn't the case.  You need to release them.

Of god I don't want to relive it but two seasons ago as the playoffs were under way I thought I had resigned my 3 time cy young winner to a long tern extension for roughly 8 mil a year. As it turned out I forgot and he left in free agency to a 110 mil 5 yr deal to a team that perennially makes it far in the playoffs. Set my team back more then I could imagine seeing as he was only in his late twenties at the time. God damn it!

I let cbriese in as a replacement owner in MG and he started crying about the world chat.   To ADMIN.  Then ADMIN refused to remove him in season despite the fact that he was being far more disruptive to the world as a goddam REPLACEMENT OWNER!!!    Easily the dumbest move I've ever made.
That was a fun year. My team went on a tear at the end of the season and made the playoffs, tard. I also got kicked out of one of the cult Gleeman worlds that year when I threatened to claim a player that had been accidentally waived by someone. Good times.

Assuming that the contracts I handed out the first season don't count, the dumbest move I ever made was the time I added four relievers to the 40 man roster right before the Rule 5 draft and forgot to submit the moves. All four were taken.

Every one of my drafts.

Kicked out of two worlds?   Ever think the problem might be you?
6/12/2011 9:38 AM
Nah. Both worlds were run by egomaniacal control freaks who don't like anyone questioning their judgment. Tweaking them was a whole lotta fun.

Yet, oddly enough, 30 other owners wanted you gone.  Go figure.

Most of my errors were poor valuation decisions not procedural errors.

Two issues that I had multiple times that I have adjusted my process to prevent are:

1) Getting into a bidding war on good to very good, but non elite FA. Now, I don't put myself in those situations as the odds of an over pay are extremely high.

2) Not optimizing the dollar structure of long term deals. Now I keep a spreadsheet for all my worlds projecting out future payroll and budgeting 7 seasons in the future.

The procedural error I did make that was somewhat painful involved not getting a player who was on the DL added to the playoff roster in time for the first series.

And throughout the land, Mike was henceforth known as the poor man's Aaron Gleeman.

Well done, briese the elder.
