Ok so I have a guy age 36 with a salary of $13.5 mil and his buyout is $3.375....sounds like I should bite the bullet and save myself $10 mil

If he's not worth $13.5m, then yeah.

What I've been able to do in the past is buyout the guy, and then resign him to a one year contract at a much cheaper cost that's more in line with his value.  This assumes that nobody else signs him first.
