I understand some ratings are more important than others.  What would you consider the most important rating for Hitters and Pitchers?

For example here are all the ratings that go into a catcher.

Dur Health Contact Power Vs Left Vs Right Batting Eye Speed Range Glove Arm Str Arm Acc Pitch Calling

Do you weight these categories more than others?  for example, in my opinion speed would be to important for a catcher.  Would it hurt, no but is it more important than contact rate in my opinion know.

Let me know what categories you look for in a position.

You're going to get about 50 different responses.   There isn't a "most important" because they work in conjunction with one another.

For hitting, splits always matter.   I "group" contact/speed/baserunning and power/eye.   But it never hurts if your slap hitter has a good eye nor does it hurt your power hitter to make good contact.

Speed actually matters only on the basepaths. So, for example, you could have a SS or CF with sufficient range (85+) and 0 speed, and he wouldn't necessarily be any worse than a similar defender with 90 speed.

What MikeT23 said ... The best example of ratings working together are speed / baserunning. 100 speed is worthless if the player has 30 baserunning. For pitchers you might be able to get away with lower control and pitches if the player has high splits, lower splits if the player has high control and pitches. But if the pitcher has low control and low splits it won't matter if he has all 100 rated pitches. He will be get shelled.

Since hitters who are 85+ across the board are very rare, I tend to build my lineup slot by slot. I've got certain characteristics I look for in hitters for positions 1-6 (great eye for leadoff, good eye and contact for #2, as good as possible for #3, great power but can be lacking elsewhere for cleanup, great splits for #5 and another cleanup type for #6) and try not to use terrible hitters in the other two or three spots (hopefully they're great defensive C or SS, at worst). Obviously, I aim for the best players I can acquire for every spot, but that's not always realistic.

Of course, some players end up hitters themselves into or out of the roles I start with, but that's how I approach things in the offseason.

"100 speed is worthless if the player has 30 baserunning."

Not necessarily true.  If a player has very good speed and bunt ratings, he can get a lot of bunt base hits.

He'll also steal himself back to the bench if you don't have basestealing ratings set properly.

What do you guys think of this formula.

=SUM(Contact+VS Right+VS Left+Eye+Speed*0.3+Power*0.75)

For hitting

Then for fielding

Range +Glove+ Arm Str + Arm A
then add pitch calling for catchers.

It seems everything is important in fielding.

100 speed and 30 baserunning also isn't useless for when a player is trying to score from 1st on a double, or some similar siuation.

You don't have to over geekify things. For defense find the defensive recommendations page by clicking on the listed position for any player on your edit rosters screen. Look at the minimums for each position then try to top them. It's as simple as that.

Let me clarify ... As a basestealer, 100 speed is worthless with low baserunning. I missed the sitestaff post that it was nitpick day in the forums.

IF hits, stretching singles into doubles, doubles into triples, etc.  speed w/o baserunning is very useful if you aren't trying to have a basestealing team.

pretty annoying if you do want to keep your basestealing settings on though.

That is correct. Players who can field really well and also hit well are pretty rare, so they tend to cost a lot when they become available. It's better to think in terms of minimum baselines of skill for a given position (both on the field and in the lineup).

That's hbdgirl hanging with the cool kids.  But you know she wants some of me and my plaid shirt.

"geekify", what a great, and descriptive, word. Noted for future reference when trying to talk to my son-in-law.
