College/HS scouting budget Question Topic

So if i have 18 mill put in each of these and another team has 10 Mill in each of these and he has the 1st pick and i have then 10th i can still get a better prospect them him, correct? Since i have more money into those scoutings i can see more prospects them him? Is that right?

Yes, theoretically, but it's unlikely. Most of the very best prospects will be seen by at least one guy ahead of you, so you probably won't get one of the top 5 guys, and he will probably see at least one of the top 5 guys, so he will probably get a better player than you. But not certainly, and you will see more prospects than he does.

My rule of thumb for spending 18-20M on both draft budgets and manually ranking is that i'll get someone about 50% down my list from my draft  position, i.e. drafting 10th i should get my 5th ranked guy or thereabouts.

In a recent draft with 18m in HS scouting, I had 7 picks in first 80.   All were ranked in my top 20.

Mike-- that high hit rate with a 18-20/0 draft budget is just math... If you don't see half the top prospects, you're more likely to have guys in your top 20 fall to you, because they're not as good as the top 20 for someone who budgets 20/20.  Put more simply-- the more prospects you see, the more that get taken before your turn.  That's the whole basis for the 20/0 strategy-- you get the same guy you would have but you don't waste money seeing (and listing) a bunch of guys that were going to be drafted ahead of your turn anyway.

Yeah, it was.  I don't normally have that many high picks but I usually get all top 30 ranked players in the first 3 rounds.   Part of the reason is because I often drop the signing issue players out of my top 20(since I don't like chasing IFA, I usually budget less in prospect).

I've had good success (about 7 guys in my top 40 without any compensatory choices) with about $14mm in each. I don't think in any draft I've ever had have I failed to get one of my top 8 ranked players and usually I get one of my top 5 even if my pick is in the 20s. I ft my #1 ranked prospect with the 31st pick once and the guy is pretty decent.
