Starter or Reliever? Topic

Edgar Reyes linked below. This may be a moot point, because who knows if he makes it to the majors and my advanced scouting isn't great, but I've never had somebody with this stamina/durability. I figure in the pen, I could still get about 150 innings out of him, which may be worth it. Thoughts?

Durability: 85
Stamina: 52
Control: 58
vL: 88
vR: 86
Pitch 1: 79
Pitch 2: 69
Pitch 3: 44

definitely a RP.  if his stamina gets close to 52, you could use him as a long reliever.

If he hits those STA/DUR numbers, I think he could log 200 ip out of the pen

If used as a SuA, he could essentially be a one-man bullpen. I've had guys that can shut down the opposition (more often than not) two innings every other game, but this guy will probably crack 200 IP a couple times in his career out of the 'pen.

These types of pitchers are among the most valuable commodities in this game, IMO. As long as you have a solid closer, the rest of your bullpen is pretty much nonessential.

Whatever you do, don't waste him as a closer. Oh, how I hate when owners do that.

Reliever.  And the true beauty here is once developed he may be a 'one man pen' type, which will allow you to carry fewer pitchers, hence spend more on other things you need.

really the primary value of having guys like this is that if you have enough horses in your pen, you don't need your starters to go more than 5 IP a start.

it's a lot easier to find quality 60 stamina starters than it is to find quality 75+ stamina guys

this is one option, but it's sorta retarded.  only carry 10 pitchers for what- so you can have a 3rd string SS?

and by "sorta retarded" i meant "extremely retarded"

Depends on where you spend your money.  Its retarded if you don't make it work for you.

I assure you that not using roster spots in order to save money is retarded regardless of how you go about doing it

Paying one guy $5M a year to eat up 200 quality innings is better than paying two guys $4M a year to eat up 200 quality innings.  That extra $3M could be the difference in acquiring that Free Agent that makes an impact for you. Or it may allow you to put that $3M in something like training and keep more of your guys on the field.

Money management is never retarded. You need to cover for about 1500 innings pitched each season.  Covering that with $40M instead of with $43M allows that money to be spent elsewhere. It's a small thing, but nice when you run into a guy that allows that.  Keep this in mind throughout your entire roster and it may make a difference in your organization.  It's all about looking for advantages, big and small.

The way you're wording it is 'tarded up but deano is too dumb to understand.    Think of it like a playoff roster.  I routinely cut two, maybe three, pitchers off my roster so I can add "specialty" players who can play D, lacks DUR for a full season or maybe rakes lefties but can't field a position.   Having a guy like that allows you to carry players like that during the regular season.

i understood perfectly what he's saying, and you're better off using the roster spot on two guys who eat 100 IP at a more efficient rate than the 200 IP pitcher.  or split the 200 IP among two guys who perform at similarly efficiency and pay less.  the retarded part is not realizing that instead of paying a premium on pitchers for their stamina, you can focus on actual quality.

Because of your 'tarded up wording, I'm not sure if you're agreeing or disagreeing.   If I can get same quality and quantity from one guy at a similar pay grade, I take the one guy over 2-3 every day.    Because it gives me more roster flexibility.     Do you agree?
