It doesn't seem like there is really any negotiating with returning players in this game.  Its either give them their demands or accept that they'll leave.  Is there any chance at a change so some players (whose ratings should be able to clue owners as to if they would be a candidate) will accept offers that are a little bit lower than their demands?

Players lower their demands all the time.

That is true, but they do not accept offers lower than their demands.

Free agents do.

I've gotten a lot of FA who wanted 2 years but i offered one and they signed. Usually the cheaper variety, 4m or less. But if they asked for a particular amount per year then no, well outside of arbitration. Well that's not exactly true either. Eh.
