So I've gotten to a frustrating point where I know a lot about this game but I'm still doing something wrong, and I'm having a really difficult time figuring out what it is. I'm looking for a long-time, experienced owner, to bounce ideas off of on player evaluation to see if I can get myself better at this game. I've got a few teams that I feel like should be very, very good that just aren't performing well, and I'm out of ideas on how to fix that in particular.

Sitemail me if you're interested. Thanks in advance.

Play in more tard worlds, and you'll do better.

You've won a WS.  You make the playoffs about 1/3 of the time.  Doesn't that make you an above average player?

An average player would have made the playoffs around 50 times (6 / 16 * 130), and won approximately 4 World Series (1 / 32 * 130) in 130 seasons.  Also, a career losing record.  So one can argue that trop is a below average player on all counts.

But he's still a good guy.

I do appreciate that I guess, tec. The part that frustrates me is I am not dumb, but you and I have roughly the same numbers in mind - below.500 record and only one ws. I went through alot of owners' profiles and about four sounds like where I should be. i have gotten some responses and plan on chatting with you guys, but anyone else who has thoughts, please, feel free to get in touch.

WS is a poor way to judge an owner's ability.    Theoretically, you should have made the playoffs about 10 more times.    More troubling should be the almost 50 times you've managed to lose 90.    90 losses is a complete failure(I've done it 6 times and each one of those were miserable, poorly-built teams).    Figure out how you've managed to build total losers 36% of the time and you'll have your answer.

also, career won loss record and w.s. and playoff appearances/wins can largely be skewed by taking over and/or rebuilding teams. if you acquire a crap team, you will add more losses to your record right off the bat until you turn them around. you also wont make the playoffs for several seasons.
not that that's my excuse for being a worse hbd owner than you.
i truly had/have to constantly ask people who know more than me what i'm doing wrong or more specifically what they do when they build their teams in order to improve the ones i have.

I sort of ignored the W/L totals for that reason.    It's when you constantly build losers is when you're missing something.   It doesn't take 5 seasons to turn a 50 game winner into a 75 game winner.

also take into account the quality of worlds you're in. if you're in worlds where 90-100% of the owners 'know what they're doing' and have won multiple world series, it's much harder for you to squeak out even one of your own.

Show me a losing team, and I'll show you a bad defense. You have to have to have to use the defensive recommendations. I also seem to find teams that stray away from strong vsR ratings in both pitchers and hitters when I examine a losing roster.

Are you saying you have to follow the defensive recommendations given by SIM when you edit roster?  Or are you saying you need to follow the recommended ratings at each position?
11/21/2011 3:16 PM
He's saying the latter. I try to exceed as many defensive ratings as I can.

I don't disagree.  But I've found it to not be as true at CF and 2B if you make sure they have good arms.

i definitely don't **** around with CF defense, do you have examples of guys who have been decent w/ questionable range/glove?
