I suppose it's how loosely you use the term "questionable" but this guy has done well at CF  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Alexei Guillen in a small sample size, but the numbers have been fantastic.  And this guy has been serviceable at 2B on a WS winnning team:  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Albert Martin

You've won a WS.  You make the playoffs about 1/3 of the time.  Doesn't that make you an above average player?
An average player would have made the playoffs around 50 times (6 / 16 * 130), and won approximately 4 World Series (1 / 32 * 130) in 130 seasons.  Also, a career losing record.  So one can argue that trop is a below average player on all counts.

But he's still a good guy.
An average player in a world filled with 31 random opponents might have posted those stats. In the worlds trop joins, not so much.

wouldn't invest too much in guillen's small sample size, and martin has 39 errors and bad plays in < 2 full seasons, which is pretty bad.  2B defense you can skate by on a bit easier than SS and CF, but i would only play guillen at 3B and martin at LF/RF/3B.

That's why this game is fun.  There are multiple ways to build a team and win.  I wouldn't hesitate to play a guy like Martin at second base in the future.  I don't think he hits well enough to play COF and he has tons of errors at 3B, but I feel like his bat and defense align well at 2B.

I'll check back after Guillen gets a few seasons under his belt at CF.

my rule of thumb is that if a guy doesn't hit well enough to play the toughest position where he's an average+ fielder, he's not good enough to be an every day player

of course, it's not a huge deal if you surround him with enough studs to pick up the slack.  but it's hard to get your hands on a lot of studs without big IFA signings and high draft picks, so if you're playing to win 90+ every year, it really helps to aim for better defense.

I don't disagree.  But I've found it to not be as true at CF and 2B if you make sure they have good arms.
Put a SS arm in CF and he'll generate tons of plus plays, mostly from preventing hitters from stretching singles into doubles.  But without the range and glove ratings to complement superior arm ratings for CF, he'll also allow balls to fall in or just plain misplay them . . . it would be a wash.

so basically it being a wash then allowing for a better then average defensively 3B with a decent bat playing at CF should be a good thing as his bat will always be better then a good defensive CF.

I quite agree that it is a wash, (or close to it) in terms of the defensive-ness of whats been described.  But when you add in the fact that you can more easily get a better bat (and for less money) with the 3B type player as opposed to the CF...

I used this guy at CF and was very happy with the way he played there:  http://whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2591708  granted he is more of a SS then a 3B, but his .991 FP at CF was very nice.

i agree with you bro.  i'm just saying you don't have to only follow the recs for position players.  more than one way to skin a cat.

I've played with trop for a long time and I consider him to be very knowledgeable at this game. I'm surprised at this thread. Trop if your Spahn team is the team You think is underachieving one thing I noticed when looking at it a few weeks ago last time we played is you have Jared Curtis in RF. Didn't spend a lot of time analyzing why that is but obviously he's killing your defense there. If there's a way you could dh him or worse case play him in LF that would help a lot I bet.
