C/DH Types at 1B?? Topic

Anyone ever experiment with this?  A C/DH type with a range of say....8, glove 24

What kind of defensive ramifications might this bring?  Would glove be more important than range for a 1B?  Would the glove kill his infielders?

Would it matter if the guy was virtually guaranteed  a .300+ average, .400+ OBP and 45 Bombs??

expect 20+ minus plays a year

Here is the guy I had to use last year:  Fernando Cortes.  He is similar to your guy defensively at least I think.

Wonder if the offensive production would make up for it.  Mind you, the 1B that would be getting moved puts up a .280 AVG, .350 OBP with about 30 HR a year while playing good D.  So it may not be a great tradeoff.

Offensive difference would be about 12 HR......30 AVG points and maybe 40 OBP points.....worth the minus plays?

Not in my mind.    Stresses the pitching staff.

I've had Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Yorvit James playing 1B in For Life, because I'm in the NL and can't trade him based on the league's rules.  I think his bat is worth the (-) plays.

I'd say definitely not worth it.  Not when you can get 20 plus plays just by putting someone with 50s across the board at 1B.  That's a 40 play difference, which is over 30 runs.

Cant trade him?

So a +/- play = greater than .75 runs?

I don't think that is accurate... where is that info coming from?

Don't know but this thread, in part because of my 5 pitchers, opened my eyes to the importance of +/- plays.

I remember digging into the minus plays for a C-type playing first base a couple of months ago and posting the findings in a thread that was going on at the time, but I cannot find that particular thread right now and I don't have the opportunity to go back and re-do the analysis.

IIRC, a number of the minus plays for poor-range 1B (mostly converted catchers) were doubles down the line.  I assume that most of them would have been outs with a "regular" 1B.

Turning outs into doubles does feel kind of costly.

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Kansas City Swing Kings Franchise Profile

Probably the best fielding team I've ever put together.    70+, 1- play.    At one point, I was something like 44-4 and every pitcher was having a career year.

This is a great thread. Thanks for sharing.

It did make me feel like I needed to overhaul my team... Haha

Here's the thing:

Many owners ***** and moan about player awards.  They say defense it weighted too heavily.    I ask "Is it?  Maybe the people who make the game know what's more valuable within the game."    And I think, far too often, that some in CS have no clue.   However, they may not be the same people who made and developed the game.  And those people are putting a pretty good amount of emphasis on D wrt awards.    Why?

I am more inclined to pay attention to defense over offense, but can understand how many go the other way.  Offense is easy to see the results in, it's one guys stats....AVG, OBP, home runs, etc.

Defense has many more moving parts...ratings, pitchers, ballpark, etc.  and is much harder to quantify.
