Yep, shobob, real life does get in the way.  And, since this is just a game on the internet, no one should be upset if their world is shut down after 4 seasons because life got in the way for one of their members.
Except for the fact they are spending money and time on something that they have a reasonable expectation of lasting longer than 4 seasons.  I hope you were being ironic- If you are going to shut down a world because one owner leaves there is no point in even allowing the world to form.  Even if it's the best world in HB there will still be turnover.  What if an owner dies?  Develops serious health issues and has to quit?  The odds of keeping the same 32 people together for any activity longer than a year are pretty slim.  Yes, everyone knows going into it that there is a chance it won't last, but to say "if one owner quits the league will be disbanded" is ridiculous.  75% seems like a good number to judge a league, though it seems like judgement should be used rather than an arbitrary number.

I can't speak for the veterans but as a new player I can say that giving people a chance to join a new world will probably increase the number of teams bought in HB.  I like the idea of taking a team from the start and trying to build it just because I will "own" it right away as opposed to taking over someone else's team.  I don't care if it will give me a better chance to win (it will probably actually make it harder to win anyway, at least for newbies).  I'm going to join an existing league after the new one starts, originally I was only to join one world.

And yes, I'm a newbie so go ahead and make derisive comments about my lack of knowledge about HB, but this is common sense stuff.  Edit- Having stated my opinion, I do respect that veterans obviously know more about HB and I respect their opinions.

Force owners to buy a 5 pack that can only be used in the new world.   Make sure all 32 owners understand that one opening in the first 5 seasons means the world shuts down.

I bet that does one of two things:
1.  New worlds never open
2.  Screening is so f'ing tight that it becomes one of the best worlds in HBD

Either way, it's win/win.

Problem solved.  You're welcome.
This.

I'll explain to you, since you're a n00b, why so many people are against new worlds forming.    A LOT of worlds are having trouble filling.   I joined one that had been waiting 5 MONTHS because I thought that sort of preserverance and determination deserved to play again in 2011.    Believe it or not, veteran owners drop worlds to join NEW worlds.   That only hurts the world they left.   Now, IMO, they don't leave a good world they like.   So, in truth, new worlds don't affect me one bit.  So, from a personal standpoint, I don't care if they open 20 new worlds today.   But it hurts a lot of people.   Some of it is self-inflicted but waiting months to play again definitely hurts the product as a whole.

As for making a team your "own", it's my belief that it takes 3-4 seasons to do that.   Whether you get a team of players generated from scratch or inherit players from the previous owner, they aren't "your" players.    Your players are the ones you draft and sign or trade for.    Inherited players aren't.

Hope this helps.

"I like the idea of taking a team from the start and trying to build it just because I will "own" it right away as opposed to taking over someone else's team."

There's the fallacy in the attraction of "New Worlds".  You're really not taking a team "from the start" . . . it's already populated with players, with a mix of good and bad, and often with some strange and undeserving contracts.  If you're patient and get into the right world, you can often find a team that was run by an experienced and knowledgable owner, and you will inherit a team that's in much better shape than a "new world" crapshoot.

that's what bugs me the most about the people joining "new" worlds.

Somehow people think it's like a brand new car - never been touched.  In all reality, it is like if a car dealer kept a '92 oldsmobile in a back lot for 20 years, never letting anyone touch it or drive it, then went and replaced all the parts and engine with ones that had been used for the last 20 years.  Just because nobody has driven THAT car before doesn't make it "new" and fresh.  It's still an old crappy car with crappy parts.

The fun in worlds that have been around a long time and "new" worlds is the EXACT same thing - changing and fixing that crappy car (team) and making it yours.  It takes me 3-4 seasons in an existing world before I start to feel like a team is mine and it took me 3-4 seasons in the only new world I joined before it felt like mine.

We'll just have to agree to disagree about wanting to take over a new team- I know the new team will not be any better than an existing one but still when it's mine from the get go it's more fun.  It's not logical but that's the way most people are, especially new players.  Most people want to buy a new car instead of an used one, even when it makes more economic sense to get the used car.  (Talk about comparing apples to oranges- internet baseaball game to car buying.)

I did not know owners were quitting to join new worlds, I can see that is a problem.  I'm not saying there should be unlimited new worlds or a new one every week, but WIS is in this to make money and they need to attract new customers while retaining a majority of current ones.  At least for me, when I first saw the site I was excited about playing, but then when there were no new worlds to join I was dissapointed.  The main point of my first post was objecting to the exceedingly stringent (buy 5 teams, one owner quits- league dissolves) rules that Mike proposed.  Either allow no new worlds or have reasonable rules for a limited number of new worlds.

I guess we'll just have to disagree on "reasonable".    Since you agree owners leaving existing worlds to join new ones is a problem, there really should be some excessively tight guidelines.   You have to know that, in season 2, Thome will no longer be "new".   Then you have to fill while people still seek out "New Worlds".  Historically, new worlds lose 3-6 owners after season 1.    Simply because it wasn't what people thought it would be.   Maybe you don't mesh with all these new, strange people.   Maybe you were given a turd.    Maybe HBD just isn't for you.   There are any number of reasons why people quit.  No one has to die or become ill.   They just don't like the world, the owners or HBD in general. 8yugy

what's "8yugy" mean?
1/12/2012 9:44 AM
hbd slang

It's part of a secret language.   I could tell you but one of my people would have to kill you.

i'll do it!

I actually agree with those who are against new worlds, and I still joined Thome. I have no defense for it other than "I wanted to". If it closes after one or two seasons because of poor retention then that is that, it was not meant to be. As for what retention should be required, I agree with Mike that it should be higher than 75%, not 100%, but maybe 90-91% after five seasons (two or three leaving) and 80-85% after 10 seasons, with maybe a requirement for 100% the first couple seasons (barring death or severe injury). It should be severe, and there should be no requirement that new owners must join, as I am similarly concerned that some of the rookie owners might be aliases, or that true rookie owners will jump ship because they do not like their team.

If a world makes 6-10 seasons, I don't think I'd elminate it regardless of retention.

As for your alias comment, yeah, Thome found 6 new owners in 3-4 days.    If anyone thinks they're all new to HBD, I can't help you.

Frankly, the world filled much quicker than I expected, with both rookie and veteran owners. It makes me a bit nervous. And greeny9 is in my division...having taken over his team in Mantle, well, I just hope nothing about this new world offends him so much as Josias Johnson's contract.

1/12/2012 12:35 PM
Can't be.   greeny9 was quitting HBD.

depends, if my tea in the morning isnt hot enough I might just go off the handle...  :)
