How good can this guy be in a fairly neutral park that slightly favors pitchers? (Anaheim) He doesn't have much room left to grow, projected to 53 control and 100 vL. His control is a major concern, because even with 65 control, he is a stud.

This isn't a gigantic sample size, but 3 seasons of a 3.57 ERA with 46 control is pretty solid...  I would suspect your guy could outdo this with his dominance in splits.  The only concern is that he might not be able to get you enough innings as a starter and could tax a short bullpen.

And after actually looking at his stats, I'm baffled as to why he doesn't appear to be better...

Here is a better link.
As a sports fan from the Toronto area, I hate him just because of his name.

The reason his ERA is high is because of the amount of walks he gives up. His OAV, OBP and SLG are pretty good (in his 2 previous seasons)

I have never seen a player with splits that high, control that low, and pitches so decidedly "meh." I would expect results pretty much like he has given you: lots of walks; not many strikeouts; more home runs than his 98 GB/FB rate would seem to indicate; not more than 170 innings because he has low stamina, mediocre durability and he throws too many pitches. But I also would think that he might dominate on occasion, and for that I might keep him as a 5th starter/long reliever. ERA means less to me with oddball guys like this because some of them are streaky. What is his quality start percentage over the past few seasons? If it is abysmally low he might not be worth wasting time on.

Agree with ted-- he is what he has been over his career, a very slightly above average pitcher.  SP4 on a short pitch count, or LRA.

Okay thanks guys. I was thinking about trading him, but I wasn't sure how much I could get for him...

I am actually curious but can not get a look at that stats: what is his quality start percentage over the past few seasons?

I think ted is on the right track. He looks to be a feast or famine guy. With that control he could easily have a bad inning go really bad really quickly. I would expect though when all is said and done season 20 will be typical. I do think he will be a lot better as a starter than as a RP.

His year's ERA is too high, but he'll settle down into a 4-ish ERA, maybe a bit higher.  As a 5th starter, he's pretty good.  How many teams throw a 5th starter with an ERA of 4?

I would schedule him right in front of a workhorse who chucks lots of innings.  That gives you BP a break.

He's not better because of the control and he has two crappy pitches.  If you have a backup catcher with a high PC, you might always catch him when throwing this guy.  Good way to rest your #1, too.

Oops...I just checked.  You don't have a high PC catcher on your roster.  YOu'll have to put up with his lousy pitches.

Has it ever been proven that a high-PC Catcher helps a pitcher with poor pitches? Has dev staff ever said this? That seems like much more complex programming than simply higher PC = more pitcher success in general, with a fairly linear effect.

Yah, definately a SP then a RP.  When he blows up every 4 or 5th inning as a RP you are quite likely to lose that game.  But as a SP if your bats are at least decent he will probably net you lots of wins.  With the odd blowout.  Probably 12-17 wins a season and 5-10 losses.

All star? With that control?
