Salary dump/cash trades, are these legal? Topic

I need to free up some ML payroll to fit another guy on my ML roster and pick up some minor league FA's to fill out my minors.

Can I offer another team an average ML reliever for cash and 3 minor leaguers in return?

You can.

The other owners can also choose to veto that deal if they wish.  Depends on the world.  Deals like this are tolerated in some worlds, and vetoed in others.

Im sure it is legal, but it would depend on the world whether they would approve. I'd ask them, see where they stand.

If the league owners dont agree with it, how else am I supposed to make ML cap space? I can't be hand cuffed by my leagues opinion =/

Sure.  But you're talking an average ML reliever...which means everybody has one or two.  If they already have a couple of your guys, why would they send cash your way....and prospects.  If the prospects you get a culls, you'll probably get vetoed.

Well, for one, you could trade away a better player for better prospects, so that you still clear salary (although it might hurt your team short-term). And you can always transfer budget money.

Well, it is your budgetary and payroll decisions which are handcuffing you.

It's not the other owner's responsibility to bail you out of problems of your own doing.

I guess you could work draft picks in that trade.

I often send medium range prospects with the salary (player) for a long term farm player when I try and dump a salary. For me it is worth it as I like to play with a low ML budget so every dollar helps and I do not like to have any long term contracts unless its an absolute stud or if I found it to be beneficial to be on the receiving end of a salary dump.

The first two responses weren't antagonistic.   Then you dropped this beauty:  "If the league owners dont agree with it, how else am I supposed to make ML cap space? I can't be hand cuffed by my leagues opinion =/"

That's when people explained that you painted yourself in a corner.

Of course you can be handcuffed by your league's opinion.  That's what the veto rule is for.  Most good worlds have made rules against salary dumps where is not legit big-league talent being exchanged.

The budgetary process is educated guesswork.  Most guess a little bit wrong, because there are 32 prognosticators and not all can guess right.  The whole reason for budget limits in the first place is so that teams have a somewhat (though not perfectly) level playing field.  I've posted many many times on these boards in the past about using salary as an asset in trades, and philosophically, I am not against it.  I have, however been persuaded that in HBD it can be a bad idea due to the potential high turnover of owners and the bad effect of high turnover on world quality.  In real life, owners can't flee the world and join another when they've made a mess with this; they have to live with decisions.  In HBD, the cash in trade issue can totally screw over a world and there are no consequences to the owner who does this and leaves a world.
