As rough guidelines, I figure the maximum number of innings able to be pitched in a season as.

DUR*STA/10 for starters   and
DUR*STA/16 for relievers

Some funky stuff starts to happen at the extremes, but for most pitchers, it seems to come out pretty close.

And, on topic, if you truly want to maximize the innings you get out of an elite reliever, you should run them as a Tandem B every time they are 100%.  See:
Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Roger Kane &
Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Dwight Williams

Used this same strategy for these two:

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Jerry Crosby &
Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Tyreace James

Crosby had an off year but pitched about as much as he did the year before in Setup A.  Both role types will give you lots of IP.  Both were 100% every other day almost every single time.  I also reduced the pitch counts of my good starters and ran them out in a 4-man rotation.  The three best all got about 200IP.  My 10-man staff survived the season very nicely, but it did require a lot of managing to constantly move the tandem starters in and out.

You can do a 10 man without pulling your hair out on a tandem. You do need the right pitchers and the right park.

Is there a good rule of thumb for setting pitch counts?  Both TPC and MPC?

Start with the recommendations and adjust up/down as needed based on your observations.

Here is me getting schooled in the maximization of relief pitcher innings:  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Denny Watson.

I was using Watson as a closer and feeling good about his 84 innings a year.  Traded him to a guy who used Watson as a tandem starter...got 179 innings and 22 wins out of him.  Then he beat my *** in the playoffs en route to winning the World Series.

The most innings I ever got out of a guy in a true closer role was Jerry Adams in season 3 of Mantle.  107 IP, but he was really a LR type being used in the closer role.  DUR/STA of 32/55, with an inning available setting of 7, IIRC.

For SPs if their stamina is 65-70 with reasonable durability (25) I set them for 90 /90. Anything above 75 stamina I set on 100/100 unless their durability is in the teens ... Then I set it to 90/90. I always use pull rating of 1 so they make their pitch counts. If the pitcher gets shelled, I shrug and go to the next game. No reason to have your SP pulled after a few runs in the 1st inning and overtaxing your bullpen for one game in a 162 game season.

Great way to use him.  Bear in mind that win totals from your Tandem B's will be inflated (lots of cheap W's that the A's earn a good part of), but his peripherals were excellent.

I like this concept too.  Some people are a bit too concerned with the stats of their guys.  As long as the ratings drive the game, what happened before has little to no bearing on what happens next.  I look more at game logs than overall stats when I really want to know how a player is doing - especially a pitcher.

I use the closer role and try to land a very good pitcher with very little stamina. I like to know that I have somebody reliable to close out games and the fact that they can only pitch ~40 innings anyway, makes them the perfect fit.   Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Deivi Flores and  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Ismael Chavez will be if he can stop getting hurt

The A pitcher starts the game, the B pitcher relieves him.

Sounds pretty complicated.

The dur/sta 10% guideline that noragar uses isnt completely accurate...  I have an amazing SP his numbers are HOF quality in any world, guaranteed, but his dur sta sucks, 25 67 which with the above math means he should pitch 167 innings a year.  Ive had him pitch just over 200 a few times.  The formula might work for average pitchers, but for stars who are very effective at getting outs you can get 20% or more use out of him then what that formula states.
