Relief pitcher - how to get him on track? Topic

Hello everybody.  I'm 34 games into my first season in the first world I signed up in.  I play in  the NL, at Comerica Park (2,-2,3,-2,-2).   http://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=3499384 Athur Stairs is driving me nuts.  He gives up runs almost nightly and has cost me huge in more than a few games.  I like most (wish he had a third pitch) of his ratings and he has a great rubber arm,  I have his rest settings at auto rest at fatigue and he only pitches when 100%.  I've been going with a setup by commitee and I follow Deano's (saw his videos, don't want to short change the others that subscribe to this theory) logic on ensuring you get the most quality innings out of your quality pitchers.  Stairs could throw for 180-200 innings if he stays healthy and get batters out like his ratings suggest he should.

I can't figure out the regression in his numbers from when he was 23 yrs old to now.  His ratings have only increased and my defense is (all stats are for NL): 3rd  fielding % .987; 3rd fewest errors; fourth in PO, only 7th in assists; 1st in + plays; fewest - plays; sixth in CS%; T2nd in fewest passed balls; 3rd in errors + minus plays.

Any of the vets have any suggestions on how to get Arthurs A** in gear?

Yeah I'd guess he would be playing a lot better.  If he ****** you off too much, trade him.  You could land a lot for him.

Not a vet by any stretch... but only 40 IP and 20% of hits being HR's... I'd say small sample size and moving from BUR to DET has hurt him.

I'd be curious about what others thought?

Burlington's park is -4,-3,-3,-4,-4.  It's definitely a better pitchers park, but Comerica park in Detroit isn't too shabby... -2,-2 in homers.  I keep counting on him to bounce back, but it seems like every time I check the box score, he has a terrible game.  Thank for the comments guys.  I'd rather not trade him, but if it keeps going like this... I might have to put feelers out there.  I'm 19-14 and in 1st place by two games.  If Stairs pitches better in some games (he's blown 4 ,lost 4), I could be starting to run away from division.  Not that I would have won all of those games, but maybe half if he pitches like he should.

This discussion, to me, is how to get his HR #'s down. Your catcher's PC is a bit low for my liking, but I don't understand how a 92 GB/FB guy has given up that many.

I'd like to get a catcher with a PC in at least the 80s, but I had other holes to fill and Jeremy won the GG last year, so I went with him for at least an other year.

HBD is notorious for this kind of thing. Ride him out, DO NOT trade him just because he isn't doing well 33 games into the season. That guy is an absolute stud, will easily throw close to 200 innings a year.

I had a better RP start off the season with a 6 ERA after 40 IP. After 140 IP he has around a 2.8 ERA now

There's an owner in one of my leagues that regularly loses 100 games a year (for about 12 seasons), the season after he won 90 games and went to the playoffs, he traded away a 26 year old Cy Young winner, who won the Cy Young in the previous season. His reasoning was the guy was off to a bad start, so he must be worthless. Yet he won the Cy Young the year before, those kind of short-term quick decisions are what wreck teams.

Good to know.  I'm going to need him if I'm going to hang onto the division lead.

Just gave up another walkoff homer, btw

Check out Dave Roberts

He gave up 14 earned runs in his first 25 IP for a 5.04 ERA

Then gave up 2 earned runs in his next 30 IP for a 0.6 ERA

That's a pretty good example of how #1 random this game can be, and #2 never base your opinion on a player from a low sample size

Hopefully Stairs hot streak starts now! I was wondering if maybe it was wrong for me to pitch him multiple innings or something else that I could do to fix this.  I'll look into a better PC catcher

my starting catchers PC is 58 and I have the second lowest ERA, OAV, OBP, and SLG in the league. I wouldnt worry about PC that much. Anything above 50 is good enough

94/44 dur stam....it warms my heart to see you on pace for 200 IP. bump him up to 50 PC, he can take it. You can get 250 IP out of him.

People will differ in opinion here, but....hunt other people minors until you find a catcher with min 75/75 arm accuracy and strength and min 87 PC. You'll get him for a song and your pitchers will thank you.
Willie Valenzuela. Him. Learn to tolerate OPS in the mid .500s if you can get his ratings.

Try sticking him the set up roll for awhile. With that durability and stamina he could just about pitch an inning or two twice in a 3 game series. Get him more innings and he might even out.
