There's a difference between ambition and entitlement.

"I want to be/have what it takes to be partner!" is different from "Make me partner, now!!!!!"

So, if they were made partner for 15 days and then sent back to the mail room, you don't think they'd be disappointed?

Every time I think a thread as gotten as inane as possible one like this comes along. Guess it's just coincidence that Mike is usually center stage.

Thanks for your input.

It depends. I hope a player/employee/whoever is smart enough to recognize their place. If a guy from the mailroom is approached by the CEO, who says "Bill, Jack is going on vacation for the next two weeks. We think you have potential and we'd like to give you a taste of what it's like at the top. You're going to take on some of Jack's responsibilities for the next few weeks, with a bump in pay."

If that employee throws a hissy fit when Jack gets back from vacation and he's sent back to his place, he'd be shown the door pretty damn quick.

I think trying to compare a real life job to what it would be like to play in the big leagues (even if it is fantasy) is a little far-fetched.  I can sure relate to the AA player making $38K but I have no idea what it feels like to make $327K.  I can imagine that 22-year old's reaction would be unpredictable if you took his promotion away.  Some guys won't handle it well.

My point is - and this is where guessing at a fictional player's reaction is obviously iffy at best - a guy should know his place. If he's being called up temporarily, it shouldn't be some morale crushing shock when he's sent back down two weeks later.

I don't think the move really makes sense in my opinion. Most of the time, when promoting due to injury, MLB teams are more likely to promote a journeyman type of a guy from AAA to fill a 15 day DL spot than to bring up a more highly rated AA prospect.... I am new to HBD, so maybe people do it differently here, but in real life that's usually how it happens.

The way the demotion penalty currently works is silly.

Effectively, many players get so upset when they are demoted they ruin their own careers.  Not a good simulation.

Like a lot of the game, it was a fine Version 1.0 effort.  Since development & enhancements outside of cosmetics to the interface seem to have stopped, it's on my list of things to learn to deal with or quit playing.  I've lost a few solid backups when I've demoted players one day too late or someone with a pretty good makeup took a big hit.

There are a lot of MLB players who's entire careers are bouncing between the ML and the minors. I'm sure the vast majority of them realize their place in the game and are thrilled to get the call up and the big bump in salary.  I doubt any of them like being demoted, but I also doubt any of them lose physical skills when it happens.

If the intent is to prevent over using the 40-man roster, then that's how it should be programmed.  Penalties for too many demotions overall or for an individual player.  Or maybe based on performance in the ML.  If they tear it up in the ML, maybe they get bummed if they're sent down. But if they hit .200, have a WHIP over 1.50, or have short ML stint, they've got nothing to ***** about if they get sent back down.

The current model might make more sense if the demotion penalty was reversed if the player changed teams and maybe if someone new took over the team.

This is one of the irrational parts of the game that some people seem to have decided to cling to & justify as reasonable.  I disagree.

As someone that puts his ML calibre prospects directly on the 40M roster after signing and never demotes them once they're at the ML level, i don't see the fuss.

The only players i ever demote are journeymen, or a player i don't care about, so i don't care if they lose a point here or there. I would care if people started getting boosts, for artificially shunting players between levels, or were allowed to shuttle players between the ML level and the MiL level with impunity. That doesn't happen, Arlen used to bring this up and use the Cubs as an example, but player X, was promoted and demote and promoted and demoted and he was fine. How do you know he was fine mentally? maybe he got fed up of being kicked between levels? I'd be ****** if i was getting kicked between levels over and over again, it stinks of poor decision making, or knee jerk reactions.

There can't be that many (any) significant players whose entire careers are bouncing between the levels, as they will be out of options after 3 years. They would have to pass through waivers every subsequent, year, therefore by definition they are replacement level, and not very good.

MLB players who spend their entire careers bouncing between MLB and AAA are journeymen.   And they can be replaced by another journeyman without pause.   I have HBD players I do that with.   And they are easy to replace.    If they get pissy and take a demotion hit, no big deal.  I have 4 more of them on my roster.

Is there an MLB rule that limits the number of times a player with options can be promoted/demoted in a single season?   I'm pretty sure there is not.

This tread has me wondering why no MLB teams keep 1 less SP & 1 extra position player on their roster & promote/demote 2 SPs as need all season. Seems like that would be allowed.  Players would be paid the same, so I don't see why they'd care. It would effectively be one more player in the ML, so I don't see why the union would have a problem with it.

Anybody know more this than I do?

You have to consider the logicistics of promoting/demoting in real life. For example, the Minnesota Twins AAA team is in the New England area I believe. You can't just fly guys back and forth across the country all year. If I played for a AAA team, I would get tired of getting moved back and forth.

Also, you never know with injuries. There are SPs and position players that get injured all the time during warmups or in the middle of games. You have to have some insurance.

Not really, but i recall Hendry did something similar with the Cubs at one point in the last few seasons, promoting guys to pitch in relief, sending them down and calling someone else up to do the same on a kind of rotation for a while.

When a player on the ML roster is asigned to the minors, he must stay down for 10 days before he can come back to the majors.  This is true in HBD and real life.  Thus, you can't just demote your SP between starts.
