it was a good trade for ebet, no doubt.  the setup A is decent, Id rather be paying him 4 or slightly less for what you are getting, but you gave up at best 2 AAAA guys, so u did well.

While I don't think their is anything wrong with that trade on a talent level, the guy you got isn't great, and seems a bit overpriced for 5.6mm. But thats tough to assess without understanding how the world plays.
Ditto.

TRAD NUMBER 2 ALERT:

The New York Crankees and the Tacoma Rainiers made their second trade of the preseason with the Rainiers getting pitching star http://whatif.cincinatti.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2600112 and the Crankees receiving minor league, future MLB star

I cannot see projections, nor can I see the contract for the guy you are receiving, but a #1 pick for that reliever just sounds bad. I sure hope you use him for more than the 40 innings a season that other guy did.

Rebuilding a franchise normally does not consist of trading the first pick from the prior season's draft for a 29 year old closer.  If you stick around ten seasons that will come back to bite you in the ***.  Chances are you are at most two and done though, so nice trade.

Perez will be productive for another 8-10 seasons(whether ebet can keep him that long is another question).    And he's a 150 inning pitcher if used properly.    Getting 1500 very good innings isn't a bad trade unless King is a future HOFer.   And I don't think he is.   Even with that, he'll only have 10 productive seasons himself before he starts the inevitable position player decline.   IF range/speed/power are key components to his game in 3 seasons(with good development), the trade leans towards ebet.   IF contact/splits are the key parts of his game AND he develops quite a bit over the next three seasons, it's a slight loss for ebet.

It's a good deal.

I'd be very disappointed if I landed Nolan King with the overall #1.

Mike, you make a decent argument.  If I wanted to argue the opposite side of this deal, I'd probably line up the same points you listed.  When dealing with number one overall picks, the word "untradeable" comes to mind, unless your focus is extremely short-sighted.  There is a difference between a good deal, and a deal that presents good value.

I think the difference as to whether I'd do it or not is what King becomes.   To me, he looks like a future RF/1B who'll lack power.    Nothing about his currents make me go "WOW!  He's gonna be something special."     Had he traded him for a 33 y/o pitcher, I probably think it's dumb.   But, from my viewpoint, he got a very productive pitcher, for quite some time, for a standard, off-the-rack RF.

Also, due to the age of the pitcher and the nature of pitcher/position player regression, I don't feel it's a short-sighted deal.

I still think a lot of this depends on the relief pitcher's contract.  If he is signed for one season and is refusing to resign, it is flat out robbery.  I doubt that is the case, but even three seasons of him might not be enough return.  It is easy to project King as a future 2B with solid on base abilities and good base stealing skills.  The low makeup is a concern, but Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Jeffrey Webb is a good comp for potential development, and he suffered a major knee injury that cost him range as well as a year of development.  Plus switch hitters tend to be a bit more dynamic than their contact and splits might otherwise suggest.  King might not have much power, but if his glove rounds out he won't need much more than middling power to be an impact player.

Free agent signings to come, i got some pretty good pitchers so far in my opinion.

Good pitcher, and probably worth the big money you gave him.  I'd give this signing a thumbs up...as long as you gave him a one or two year contract.  After that, I would guess his skills will go downhill very fast...

Agree with this completely.  You need to use this guy as a setup A and let him throw 120+ IP a year.  His value has been wasted to this point.

the FA SP looks like a big improvement over in house options.

98 groundball in Tacoma is great.  I think playing there would extend his career, as opposed to a different stadium not as pitcher friendly.
