What do I do with this guy? Topic

I just drafted him. Projects out to:

Sta: 63
Control: 99
vL: 98
vR: 97
Pitch1: 83
Pitch2: 72
Pitch3: 63

The problem is that his durability is currently 4 and projects to an 8. My thinking is to use him as a starter in the minors to get the most innings out of his as possible and then move him to a multi-inning setup man in the majors. In the playoffs, I can use him as I see fit and may plug him in to pitch a game a series if I really need it.

Thoughts?

I've never seen control and splits #'s all that high.  Wow.

I'm not sure that you get any more innings by starting him in the minors.  He's going to take forever to get back to 100%, if you stretch him out.  Maybe 15 starts.  I suppose at 6 innings per, he gets close to 100 innings.

I think I would experiment in the minors on what pitch count allows him to pitch every 3rd day.  But maybe your way works best.

I have a guy with similar durability and stamina,  Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Darryl Jones that I use as a Tandem B whenever he's at 100%.  I inactivate him after he pitches and keep him inactive until he's back to 100%.  I started doing this with him last season, and continuing it this season.  This seems to work OK and he is developing at a steady pace.

Unfortunately, I was only able to get 32 IP's out of him last season, and this season is projecting to around 40 IP's or so.  Your guy has better stuff, so he may get a few more innings out of him because he'll be getting more frequent outs.

But no way you're going to get close to 100 IP's out of him.

No, I'm thinking 50-60 innings if he hits those projections.

I hate those guys but I'd use him as a set-up man.  PC of 20-25.  Pitch him when he's 100%.

I'd use him as a setup guy, or 2 inning closer

The biggest problem with closers, and why many HBD owners have moved away from them, is that they typically only give you 50-60 IP's a season at best.  That leaves a lot of unused IP's on the table for high quality RP's who can give you 80-100 IP's (or more) a season.

But if this guy is only capable of giving you 50-60 IP's, he might be the ideal closer.

I wouldn't use him as a closer because I'd want to make sure I maximized his innings.  8th inning, 20-25 pitches as a SUA would do it and, effectively, make him a closer.

Maybe this makes me a jerk for asking, but why would you use the #8 pick in the draft on a guy like that?

He' won't hit his projection of 8 DUR.  One of the features or bugs in the game is that low DUR guys can't pitch enough to get enough work to increase their DUR.

They also tend to miss their projections by even more than most players for the same reason. Not enough playing time.

Do what you can in the MinL to get him as many IP as possible. But unless he DITR , however many IP you're getting now is going to be about all you're ever going to get.

If he gets close to those projections, you can carry an RP that can throw a lot of innings to offset him on your staff. He could be lights out closer. The kind of guy that's great to have in the playoffs, if the rest of your team can carry him there.

DUR is a physical rating.  It's impacted by your training budget and the player's makeup, not by their playing time.

If this were my player, I make him Setup and always rest him the game after he pitches, even if he is still at 100%. With this guy I might make it more than that, like 2-3 games. Many setup pitchers can throw 20-30 pitches and still be at 100% starting the next game. Then throw just 10 pitches and be all the way down to 50%. But these are the more-typical 20-30 STA and 60-80 DUR guys that I'm more used to.

If your player ever throws in B2B games he might be out for at least 2 weeks real time.

Those are the old "Joba Rules".

I picked this guy up off waivers.  He's pitched in two games for me since 6/4.   15/20 PC

Draft projections had a lot stronger. Also, this league is stuck in the steroid era. I'm below average in runs despite the fact that I am I play in Scottsdale and have a lineup that would be considered of 95% of the leagues. I was willing to take a risk and had him as my 5th ranked pitcher (I had the 8th pick). Pitching is at such a stupid premium, which is why you have pitchers who are getting paid like this in the league:
