The Price is Right Topic

Never saw this before. In Clemente, we're just wrapping up the offseason FA period. One player was signed for a 5-year, $20 million per year contract, with a $6,000,001 bonus.  Reading the forums, at least two owners were outbid for his services by exactly ONE DOLLAR.

In other words, the owner that signed him studied everyone's budgets, and knew exactly how much the competition had to spend, and then topped that bid by a buck. That's a smart owner. Who would've thought those "jerks" the other contestants hate on the Price is Right would be so perfectly suited for HBD?

Yeah, I've suggested WifS fix that on several occassions.

Guilty.

you'd think that would be an easy fix.....

Yeah, don't show other teams' budgets.   Ever.

Do the Red Sox know the Rays are definitely stopping at 90m payroll?

Believe it or not, I actually didn't study other budgets for that signing. My spare money was something like 26,400,000 (see the players budget here www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/FranchiseProfile.aspx) and I wanted some breathing space for a call-up etc. I've seen people in other worlds add the 1 dollar at the end just in case, and I got lucky that 26 was other bidders limit.

It's a lesson to everyone to watch their dollars and cents!

I usually add 100 bucks or something like that at the end of each deal, for this reason.

i employ this strategy when trying to sign coaches. add a buck or $5 or $50 or $100

I usually always go up to my limit and then throw in a random 5 digit number after that.  I'm thinking of the guy that stops at the million mark and the guy adding $50.

I almost always add a buck or two as well.  For the same reason.  I don't normally study budgets of other teams though unless it is in the IFA market, then I usually keep a running tab on other teams budgets and already signed IFA's so I know how much each team has left over in prospect money.

Well, you're still a smart owner quasi. :-)

Smart is relative, as is lucky.

For this season, the guy is overpaid. In seasons 3-4-5 of that deal, he'll be a real albatross. Someone in that World got lucky, but I think it may have been the other two guys.

I can see your point, but I feel you're selling him a little short. His makeup is 99, so he should be a top notch hitter longer than most. He's in his 30's, and has just lost a little power the past few seasons. Year 5 should see some big decline, but he should probably be All-Star caliber through season 4.

I think showing previous season budgets is a good idea. It helps new players to see and understand different successful budget options.

Current season budgets should not be shown.

Its also ridiculous in that, since I believe tiebreakers only come into play in the case of an actual tie, a hypothetical player in this same situation is basically saying "gee, I might put up better numbers in Denver, with a better hitting coach in their offense-friendly stadium...but I think I'll instead finish my career in Portland, since they did give me that extra dollar bill and all."

It's just not realistic in any way. But oh well, it's probably a better thread for the suggestion forum.
