I'm new to this game. I'm rebuilding and I have 3 studs in AAA I will be holding back on purpose next season. My own goals is to win a world series, so I'm going to do everything within my power to make that happen, even if it means doing stuff that would never happen in real life.

I can respect all views and positions on this, however it's a video game, so I don't have to worry about things like fielding at least 1-2 stars to sell tickets and jerseys for income. It's a video game, but it's also a sandbox. So we all have different goals, and some people's might be to have a baseball ownership experience and surround himself with other players that want the same, to create a nice simulation. I too have this goal but it's a minor goal right now, as winning my first world series is my priority. This game is a RPG if you play it that way, otherwise it's not. For some people it's just a #'s game and you can play it to win. Even if that means dancing along private world rule settings to avoid tanking out etc.

Theorycraft, min/maxing, ..I find hardball dynasty so far to be a plethora of variables to consider and conquer. I'm not sure spending payroll on free agents to field a mediocre team just to satisfy a few strangers in my world who care about what's realistic or not part of my own agenda. Down the road it might, but again it's my choice weather or not to just play ball.

So you can play as you want, and there's also the saying 'it's my 25 bucks.' As long as you aren't bad mouthing in chat and are breaking world rules, I see it as every owner's right to play the game as he wishes. Commish requests are to be taken into heavy consideration but if it's not a rule you do not have to follow it. If you have a rule 'must be realistic with your club' then kudos, but you may find it hard filling 32 spots.

I guess I'm not defending tanking, I'm just defending the right to "tank" if no rules are being broken.

Many of the best, most competitive worlds in HBD have tough minimum rule requirements that curb tanking.  They also have waitlists for people wanting to join.

In my opinion, winning a World Series "though any means possible" can often be a cheap WS win.  Winning one in a tough, competitive world gives a WS title a lot more legitimacy.

It's a proven fact that going 34-128 for 4-6 consecutive seasons and having a payroll of 10m will produce a pretty awesome team if you're not a complete moron.   However, good luck getting anyone to say "Congrats" on your first WS title when it's done using a team built in that manner.

So, if your goal is to win a WS, start losing more now.  But, when it's done, ask yourself what you accomplished.   You won't be breaking new ground, it's been done that way many, many times.   No one familiar with the game with think you conquered anything.   But, perhaps, you'll find some sense of satisfaction in following a template to a title.

I think he made it pretty clear that winning the WS was his only goal.  I doubt he cares that its been done many times before that way and I doubt he cares how we feel about it.

If you want to play on an island, go for it.  Ignore the other 32 people in your league and play away.  I think the arguments for tanking/anti-tanking always come down to the competitiveness of the league and how for a lot of people, playing with 32 strangers and beating 32 strangers, is a lot more fun than playing alone gaming the system.

It should be noted that I know my math and there would only be 31 other owners...

I guess my point is winning an on-line game is pretty low on the "Accomplishment Totem Pole of Life".    If the other nerds trying to do the same thing don't think much of your "accomplishment", what exactly have you done?

"I scored 237 points on rookie level Madden!!!" doesn't impress the chicks.
6/27/2012 9:27 AM
Well, that would depend on the chick, wouldn't it?
6/27/2012 9:51 AM
To be fair saying you won the WS in Coop doesn't impress the chicks either....virtually anything won on this website just gets a good laugh from my wife and any other females that hear about it.
6/27/2012 9:58 AM
Yeah but the other nerds think you accomplished something.

To put it another way, when someone starts a thread with "Has anyone had a player hit 82 homers with 203 RBI?", the first response is "No, I don't play in 'tard worlds."

That's pretty much the response an owner with 5 straight .250 seasons and then a WS victory will get if he posts his "accomplishment".

Sometimes I tell my wife that I'm buying another wife online. That DOES NOT get a good laugh.

33-129?!!  Damn dude!  Id join witness protection if I were you.

mezirah,

I must say that if you are keeping your AAA studs down for another full season then tanking is what you are doing.

BobbyRayWade  is a MLB All-Star type right now and has had two full seasons of mashing AAA.  His offensive numbers are 84-96-76-68-59 and his glove is76-82-90-81

His AAA OPS is over 1.000 for both seasons.  He'll hit .285 with 40 HR's in the bigs.

FranciscoFernandez is an ALL-Star catcher with a decent glove.  55-81-83-83-95 = .275-.370-.515.  He's been over 1.000 in his two seasons in AAA.  HIs glove is 72-77-71,(right now, and will improve) and he can play nearly everyday if you use your MLB catcher as a late inning defensive replacement.  Most of us would sell our sisters for a catcher like that.

If you keep J.T.Johnson down for another year of pitching work in AAA, most of us would understand.  But not the two guys above.

BTW, StewartCordova is done improving and better than your MLB SS's (both who are minimum wage guys).  He needs to come up, too.

Wade and Fernandez will even benefit from MLB coaching, as they have growth left.

Really Wade and Fernandez should have come up after 20 games last year, but that wasn't your mistake.

But, this year, if you keep Wade, Fernandez and Cordova down for more than the 20 games necessary to get the extra arb year (which we all do), then you are indeed tanking.  Enjoy the reputation if you do so.

They are clearly better than the scraggly guys you have playing at their positions, both are All-Star types, and since you have a roster filled with minimum wage guys you can clearly just move people and not worry about contracts.

Don't tank.  Move those guys up. If you do tank, be honest about what you've done.  There is kind of an existentialism to it.  I tank, therefore I am.

see, you're assuming you think he cares about what others think.  This guy doesn't care at all.  He's on an island and his only goal is to win a WS.  There are people out there that do this and there is plenty of room in the HBD world for him to operate like this without repercussions.  Will he ever play in a private world with decent competition? Probably not, but he obviously isn't interested in that.

Being the moral police only really works if the people you police think your opinion matters.
