contact: what does it mean in HBD? Topic

63 eye, 59 pt difference between AVG/OBP.    Pretty much what you'll find.
Even with 89 contact, 89 speed, 85/77 splits and 71 baserunning... just blows my mind that the dude turns such lousy numbers.  I would have thought those good ratings would make up for the 63 eye

Didn't realize you were turning this thread into another "Why is this guy playing below his ratings?" thread.     My point was eye = roughly difference between AVG/OBP.    And your player supports it.

Sure, but isn't that only because putting the ball in play necessarily gives you a better chance of getting a hit?  I guess I'm saying that while contact indirectly affects AVG because the ball being put in play gives you a better chance of getting a hit, what really determines AVG is splits, right?

This is the way I have always thought of it:

Eye - affects whether players swings
Contact - once a player swings, affects whether contact is made
Splits - once contact is made, affects whether the ball is a hit

So while you will necessarily get more hits with higher contact because the ball is put in play more often, it is really splits that determines whether there is a hit.  And power, while maybe the most important, really just determines the type of hit or is a multiplier of some sort.  Right or wrong?
If you don't put a ball in play, you won't get a hit.

Splits, speed, power, pitching, defense, baserunning and park are factors in hit/out, type of hit/out.

Yeah, obviously they all work together to create an outcome.  I just think simplifying what these things really do makes it easier to understand.  Sometimes I think people think the engine is more complicated than it really is.

It doesn't really matter.  I just look for the highest ratings I can and go for those guys :)

I'm almost certain that overcomplicates the meaning.   Contact is the ability to put bat on ball.   IOW, avoid the strikeout.   Look at the league leaders in whiffs.  Low contact.   The other ratings, including park/defense, determine what happens after bat meets ball.
Like this?

Indeed.

My first response was to boogerlips, who I think generalized a bit.  I think his statement was certainly correct, but just wanted to clarify why.

Whatever it does, when I ran my regression analysis I was surprised to see that it was the rating 3rd most corralated (sp?) with RC/27.

Can we see the results of that?

I'll give you this.

1.  Power
2.  VS R
3.  Contact
4.  BE

No surprise there.    Although it wouldn't surprise me if you ran it again in 6 months and 2-4 was jumbled around.
