53 stamina 78 durability Can he start? Topic

I found a pitcher who is a career closer and not a very good one. He has 53 stamina and 78 durability. Good Control, Good Velocity. Above avg splits. He has three pitches that average about 70. I think the fact that his pitches aren't dominant has made him fail as a closer but I think he can for sure be a good long reliever and maybe even a starter. I would think with that durability he can throw 90-100 pitches every 5 days. Any thoughts/

How about as a Tandem B every time he recovers? Been seeing that strategy suggested quite a bit on the forums.

Yes, he can start.  Any pitcher capable of handling 40 pitches per outing can start.   That's 35ish stamina.

No, he can't throw 90-100 pitches every 5 days-- he'll be fine by his next start but in-game fatigue will reduce his performance.  He can start, but on the level of 70 pitches every 3rd day.

And the pitches don't work any differently in a starter vs. a closer role.  His performance will likely be worse as a starter than as a closer given that stamina.  Can you post him?

Dedelman, I haven't played in a couple of years, just getting back into it. But the last I knew there was no in game fatigue. Have they added it finally? Sure I will post him. Just a minute...

End of free agency, no interest so I bid 4.1 million on him. If I get him and the fatigue thing is an issue he'll still be a decent long reliever I think

The original HBD engine was imported over from the SimLeague Baseball side of the site. There has always been in-game fatigue here.

We likely differ a bit on our analysis of this skills - his pitches are not very strong (average for a ML at the very best) and his vsRH is probably not really above average. That, as much as anything, has likely made him struggle as a closer (and he won't escape that totally as a LRA or SP).

If, however, you wanted to maximize his use because he is better than the alternatives, he has the Stamina and Durability to throw 40 pitches or so 80 times a season. He's the type of player that is criminally underused in many cases, and if he was a dominant pitcher with those Dur/Sta numbers he'd be among the most valuable players in the World and good for 250+ IP. He'll be considerably less effective than a dominant guy though, so I wouldn't expect him to approach those IP totals.

He would fit nicely (from a Sta/Dur standpoint) in a 2-man rotation leaning heavily on the pen. If you had two of him, they could be SP1 and SP2 on a 40 MPC and you would (almost) never have to have a swingman eat a start.

What kills him is his vR split of 58.  Mostly he will get ripped.  ERA near 5, I think.

He's not much worse than Esmailyn Piedra, who's had a pretty good career for me.

Long relief. Not sure if he should be a ml starter

He was a cheap signing. I can dump him if needed but 4.1 million is not a bad test and with spring training coming I can test without consequence. I'm going to load him up with like 130 pitches or something just to see what happens.

I think everyone would agree on one thing...he can probably eat up 200 innings, just gotta find a way to let him do it.  He may blow up on me and get waived. I think he really is average at best but on this new team of mine, average is good. After being away for awhile I have somewhat forgotten what good ratings are. LOL

dahs,

He's a lot worse than your guy.  Your guy has three pitces better than his best pitch...and one exceptional pitch.
