I don't understand what you think the Celtics will get for any of their expiring contracts. They're lined up to make an attempt to win this season, then make a play in free agency in the offseason.
draft picks and/or young players.  No superstars or anything, but hopefully some players that might develop into starter or better level players at some point.

No one truly good wants to come to Boston given its current position.  The cap space is going to go unused or used on players like Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva like Detroit did a few years back because that is all that is going to come to Boston.  The Celtics have to get their next superstar in the draft or by using the draft to get the pieces to trade for him (like with Allen and KG).  The upcoming draft is very deep, so the more picks Boston can get in it the better.
Well you have a chance to a title this year.  After this, you are looking at a 3-4 year building process which still has to get past MIA.  Might as well give it one more try with the "original" big 3, right?

Stiemsa played well.  Contributing rotation player b/c of those blocks.  Even when he seems to blatantly hack a guy, like Rashard Lewis, the refs seem to look the other way.  Just ask Flip Saunders!

Tommy Heinsohn, who we all know as a bastian of rationale thought, compared his defensive instincts to Bill Russell's!

He must be comparing him to Russell in his current state.

Stiemsma is pretty awesome, looking like the next Birdman to be more realistic than Tommy.

The Celtics chance of the title is very small without significant injuries to some other teams.  Sure that could happen, but without injuries the Celtics shot at the title this year isn't much better than the Sixers or Hawks.  Which to me means you might as well use the expiring contracts and get something for them and begin rebuilding faster and better than if you just wait and go out in the first or second round of the playoffs again this year.

lol, the Celtics' odds are WAY better than the Sixers/Hawks.  I'll take the Celtics to win the title vs your Sixers/Hawks (any other 27 teams = push) for whatever GC amount that you want.

Also, the Celtics can't get **** for KG or Ray.  If you're going to keep harping on this, name at least ONE reasonable trade scenario for each.  FWIW KG is like 99% untradeable given his salary, and even though Ray is more manageable there still aren't any mutually beneficial trade scenarios.

Bulls - Allen for Korver, Watson, 1st, and maybe future 1st (or Asik).

Kings - Garnett for Thompson (and a gigantic trade exception).

Grizzlies - Allen for Mayo (and 4+ million trade exception).

Blazers - Allen for Matthews, Babbitt

Nuggets - Garnett for Mozgov, Harrington (maybe also can get Fernandez)

All of those are reasonable offers and would provide the Celtics something of value for KG or Ray and likewise would provide some value to the team trading with the Celtics.

define 'reasonable'

Bulls offer sucks, who cares about the 29th pick in the draft.

Kings aren't $18M under the cap, and Jason Thompson sucks anyway

OJ Mayo is lolololbad

Blazers are never trading Wes Matthews for Ray, he's like the best contract in the league.

Nuggets salaries don't line up, and why the **** would we want mozgov and harrington?

Those trades are all terrible, you are seriously retarded if you think they are preferrable to taking a shot to win it all.  That's like the dumbest thing I've heard this year.

Can we please do the Portland trade today?

A late first round pick is better than nothing, especially since it would be Boston's third first.  With 3 firsts and cap space the Celtics will be much more likely to move up or make trades for more established players.  This draft is also very deep and a late first might actually develop into someone worthwhile.

The Kings are 21 million under the cap (at least according to every site I've seen - shamsports, ESPN, etc.).

OJ Mayo is a young talented player.  He would be a nice return for Allen and is a player that would start on most teams (he doesn't in memphis because they need Allen's defense in the starting lineup, similar to why Harden doesn't start in OKC).

The Nuggets are under the cap enough that the salaries don't have to match up exactly.  Harrington and Mozgov should be enough to make up any difference (with the cap space).

You may be right on the Blazers trade especially with Roy no longer around, but they are a team that could use Allen's experience and leadership and Ray's game is a better compliment with Wallace, Batum, Miller, Aldridge, etc. than Matthews is.

The Celtics will NOT win the title this year.  They won't even make the ECF without major injuries to competitors.  In fact the Celtics will be lucky to even have home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.  They are an old team past their prime.  It is year 5 for the Big 3, the window was 3 years maybe 4 when they were all brought in.  Last years second round playoff exit when the Heat were clearly a vastly superior team should have triggered that the Celtics can't compete for a title, yet a large portion of the fan base doesn't see this, and I have no idea why.

Meh, I think Ray's more valuable to the Celtics and Matthews is more valuable to the Blazers.  Ray's more valuable to the Celtics than any other team in the league tbh, which is why there's little point in trading him to just pick up the 30th pick in the draft.  If we keep him we can prob re-sign him for a reasonable price next offseason.
1/4/2012 10:57 AM
Moranis, you have no idea what you're even talking about.  The Grizzlies have basically been trying to give away Mayo, and almost traded him for Josh McRoberts who has the same market value as Chris Wilcox.  OJ Mayo SUCKS, he adds nothing to this franchise and it's retarded to blow up the team for him.

Yes, the team's odds of winning a title is small (prob like 2-3%), but it is nonzero and you don't seem to be grasping this.  This is worth way way way way more than a dumbass trinket like OJ ******* Mayo.
1/4/2012 11:00 AM
Right now we're like 20% to beat the Heat in a 7 game series, 30% to beat the Bulls.  We have the 2nd best 1st unit in the East behind the Heat, and it looks like our bench will be much improved.  The Bulls still will win a bunch more games in the regular season because their bench is amazing, but the Celtics have a chance against them in the playoffs when starters' minutes get extended.  It will be tough to beat both, but not any tougher than beating the Cavs + Magic in 10, and there's always the chance that the Hawks or Knicks or w/e can upset one of them to make our path easier.  And the finals matchup will definitely be easier than either of those 2.

We figure to win 38-40 games and are faves to win at least one playoff series, and very well could go farther.  You are acting like this is entirely worthless and worth giving up for a trinket like OJ Mayo.  Who gives a flying **** if we have OJ Mayo next year?  He's like an OK-ish guard off the bench at best, he makes ZERO impact.  Having a top 6-8 team in the league is NOT worthless, OJ Mayo is.  Try to comprehend this for like half a second.
