16 x 16, Version 16 - Bizarro Edition
No Salary Cap
1961-2014 Seasons Only
This is a 16-team league. There will be no salary cap, although I suspect most teams' salaries will fall in the $90-$100M range.
There have been 15 versions of the popular 16x16 theme. In a typical 16x16 league, we would each choose a unique player with at least 16 eligible sim seasons, then we'd take turns drafting a different version of these 16 players. The remaining 9 players on each roster would come from teammates of the 16 players drafted.
This 16th version of the 16x16 theme is similar but UNIQUELY DIFFERENT than what was typical.
Each owner will nominate a single-season team (i.e., 2014 SF Giants). The owner will then privately disclose to me (via site-mail) which player they want to draft from that team. Once all 16 teams are selected, I will post which 16 players were taken. A 15-round draft will then commence, with each owner drafting exactly one player from each of the remaining 15 teams. The draft order will be in the reverse order of cumulative salary (i.e. lowest salary drafts first).
The initial player selection and subsequent draft will populate 16 spots of your 25-man roster. What about the other 9 roster spots? This is where you should put some thought into your initial team selection. You will be able to use any undrafted player from your nominated team's roster, but you can "twist" those 9 players to any season you want (including a season already nominated by somebody else). The goal is to find teams with lots of players, especially players who might be useless for that season but have other "twisted" seasons that will be useful.
** EDIT **
Instead of waiting until the end of round 15 to fill in your 9 roster spots, each owner will select one undrafted player (for twisting purposes) from their roster after rounds 8, 10, 12 & 14. These players will not be counted toward the team salary for drafting order. The remaining five players will be selected after round 15.
Clarification: Only sim-eligible players can be twisted.
Some other important rules to consider when selecting your team:
* The team you nominate must have at least 25 unique players
* The team you nominate must have at least 4 hitters with 500+ PA/162
* The team you nominate must have at least 3 pitchers with 180+ IP/162
* You must use the ballpark that your nominated team played in during that season.
Also note
* Rule for players who played on multiple teams: Either the partial (nominated team only) or combined version may be drafted, but not both. So once a player is drafted off a team, all versions of that player are off the board. (For example, if the 1984 Cubs were nominated, somebody drafts the Cubs-only version of Sutcliffe, the combined version of Sutcliffe is off the board. The Cleveland-only version of Sutcliffe is never eligible in this scenario)
I really don't know how this will play out, as far as what the average team salary will be, so we'll have no salary cap. My inclination is that is will be much less than a normal 16x16 (which uses $120M). The division alignment will be based on total team salary (i.e., highest salaried teams in the NL East, lowest in AL West).
