So I'm facing a Greg Kihn situation... Tark just ended season 58. (I'm at Alabama). During recruiting for season 57 I sent an ineligible kid a throwback jersey out of stupidity and desperation. Naturally I got caught and got 1 "year" probation - no loss of scholarships, no post-season ban, just a friendly reminder not to eff up again. Immediately my reputation went to F (natch) and my team prestige fell from B+ to B-.  We made the NT that season, and ended on probation, but with a B+ prestige. Season 58 started with us on probation, which ended about mid season, and with the Boosters Complaining job status. We made the NT and went to the Sweet 16. Finished ranked 23 with a 25 RPI and 47 SOS. Reputation climbed up to D-.  Prestige went up to A-, but my job status is now In Jeopardy.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of job jeopardy due to reputation from boosters? CS is little help (surprise) but they do offer that "As long as you don't further damage your reputation it's unlikely you'll lose the job unless your success drops considerably."

I'm nervous about that nebulous "unless your success drops considerably" and also worried that my reputation won't recover quickly enough to get my status back. I'd have thought that the probation ending with no further ramifications and taking the team past the 2nd rd of the NT for only the 2nd time in its history in Tark would maybe even get my status back to meeting expectations, but instead things got worse. If I have a down year and end up back in the PIT is that enough of a drop for me to get concerned?

Basically I've put a lot of effort into resurrecting this program, including chipping in with conference mates to pay coaches to fill up our conference to compete with the big time BCS conferences...I don't want to be fired.

To diffuse any haters - I know I "cheated" and got caught. I expect a penalty, but losing my team seems harsh for a Namath throwback...

So you made the 2nd round of the NT and went from boosters complaining to in jeopardy? Am I understanding that right?

Did you have CS explain that specifically? Because that seems totally crazy.

I've actually never used boosters so I can't offer any first hand insight (nor would I ever lower myself to fraternize with rule-breaking scumbags ), but I can't imagine that is correct. You did the crime and the time (prestige dropping, rep dropping, job status dropping) ... and then a successful season later it drops again? That can't be how it's supposed to function.

Definitely keep pushing them.

I actually went to the Sweet 16 and went from boosters complaining to in jeopardy...

ETA: Here is CS response:

"Your job status is a combination of your reputation and your success, so I can't tell you exactly what you need to do to keep the job. As long as you don't further damage your reputation it's unlikely you'll lose the job unless your success drops considerably."

I'm going to take them at their word for now - I return 10 players from last season so I think we'll be a NT team again. As long as I keep my job I guess I don't care what the status is - unless it affects recruiting in any way...

Hey, just keep a record of that response and if you keep up your success (let's say you get to the postseason every season, but your prestige drops to B at some point) and get fired, whine until their ears bleed. You're obviously a respected member of the site so I think they'll give you your job back in case this happens (which is unlikely) as long as another coach hasn't taken it.

Note-to-self, don't use boosters.

Yeah they are rarely a good idea.  Sometimes I think they are there just to punish those of weak morals.

I feel your pain. I did the exact same thing in GD in my 9th season (first at D1AA) just to see what happened. I got the same penalty but no heat from the boosters or job status threat. My rep is a D though.

Or those who have a moment of complete frusteration and total weakness (see myself).

Just for anyone who thinks of it- DON'T DO IT.  JUST DON'T.  IT WON'T END WELL AT ALL!

i think he actually made the 16.

and i agree - if you dropped to in jeopardy straight away with that booster ****, fine. but you've done well since.

CS is ******* retarded. but believe it or not, there is a word of truth in their mindless dribble. reputation is part of their unhappiness. of course, rather than look and try to understand, they spit out something that makes little sense and sounds damn right retarded. surely, if all you had done was commit a flagrant offense of bribing a player, but then toed the line, and succeeded, your situation could only improve. CS even warns you, toe the line, not even one player under the dreaded 2.0 or your *** is out of here!! but otherwise you should be fine.

in spirit with the aforementioned warning from your AD, dac, in his infinite wisdom, decided to cut a player he promised a scholarship to, figuring he couldnt get fired on the spot or CS would have to refund him and they would DEFINITELY never do that. well, there is some truth to that. hes still here. but for how long?

I actually forgot about that cut...the kid was a scrub though...
In my defense - with the help of scrub's roster spot I landed the #8 recruiting class...

Doesn't matter if the kid was a scrub, and it barely matters that you probably replaced him with a much better player.  If your job was already being called into question over a problem with your rep, I dunno why you would make that decision...
7/6/2011 8:46 PM
replaced him with a 4star PF... I did forget about that though. Guess we'll see how it works out.

its one of those things that *usually* will work out in your favor. most of us would not do it (like all your conf mates who advised against it, lol :)  anyway most of us wouldn't do it because if you get fired, you can't get any d1 job and probably no d2 job because of the rep. its basically starting your account from scratch. hard risk to justify! 90% of the time i would guess u would be fine, so, just keep on coaching and u should be alright.
